I have a 72 luv, and i've heard that they are a little different from the other years so I'm wondering what the lowest rear gears I can get under it is without having to modify too much... Also thinking about a 5 speed. If I'm mistaken about the 72 being different, please let me know, I have looked through the upgrade threads but am just looking for a definitive answer. Even a specific model and year that I would pull it from if it needs to be that specific.

Thanks guys

Well the lowest gears are the factory 4.56. I think you mean the highest. I have 3.73s out of a 83 Pup with no modifications except taking out two of the mounting studs and replacing them with bolts. The 72 rear axle housing is identical to the other LUV years.

3.42 ratio is the highest. I found one in an '84 Isuzu pickup, 1.9 engine with a 4-speed. I think it was called an "MPG" version. Same year with a 5-speed has a different ratio. A '78 LUV with an auto came with 3.73 gears, manual had 4.10's.

any 2WD GEN2 81/82 luv or 81/87 pup with a mpg+ stiker
(its on the cab, behind the doors, at the top of the bed)
has the 3.42s

there all 4 speed,

other than one odd ball.
the diesels sold in CA state that are a MPG+ model have a 5 speed.

why, i have not a clue, other than "mabe" lowering RPMs to pass emissons.

in short finding a 3.73 will be much easyer than a 3.42
3.73s are a good middle ground, if you move any (real loads), you will not be happy moving a big load with 3.42s 1ST and reverse will be, much much taller.

the twins, 81 pup and 81 LUV both are diesel 2.2

I found a 3:42 fairly easily on car-part.com. I searched on luvs from the 80's and found a few to choose from. I picked an 81 carrier and it was a fairly easy swap.
