The ratio number is the number of driveshaft turns for 1 revolution of the rear wheels.

So on an axle with 3.31 gears, the driveshaft will turn 3.31 revolutions per 1 revolution of the rear wheels.

Also note that when people talk about "lower" gears, they are referring to a numerically higher ratio. When they talk about "higher" gears they are referring to a numerically lower ratio.

To some, this seems backwards and is often the source of confusion.

Your '80 LUV has 4.10 gears, the only gearing upgrade is 4.56 gears from '84-'87 Troopers (except the '87 turbo diesel). The rear third is an easy swap, the front is a major operation.
Do a search for engine power upgrade options.
