as i slow build my truck i was curious if the stock rear end would hold up with a 350 and 700r4. im not talking about driving it hard, i wont until i know its built properly. but for driving it around town to work the bugs out of the motor after its built and such .. will it hold up under normal driving?

The stock LUV rear has a 7.5" ring gear. It is about the same strength as the GM 7.5-7.625" 10-bolts found in S-10's & Camaro's for years.

With street tires for a while, any time it starts hooking though, it is time to start looking...

Just fyi, I used a stock 78 Luv rear end for more than 4 years behind a warmed up 350, but I also used a T-350 with a mild shift kit. The one problem is that one wheel will always spin much easier than both. I mention this so you will know that traction will be a problem any time you get a little heavy on the go pedal. The other problem is the low gear ratio used in Luvs, the 700R4 with a manually operated OD or lock up switch will get your rpms down though. If you want to take the trouble to find one, the diesel powered Luvs usually have a 3:42 ratio and this works very well with the 700R4.

i appreciate all the info so far. but for the trouble its worth to look for a diesel luv truck i would just rather pick out a good solid rear end and swap it out. but for now i just want to get the motor in and broke in. at best im going to do a mild cam on my motor but otherwise its going to just be rebuilt with fresh parts and cleaned up.

thanks guys. this is by far one of the most informative car/truck enthusiast sites ive been on for any of my past vehicles.

The Camaro 10 bolt and 12 bolt rear will fit to some degree. It is a little wide, but tire setback can help there. It will need to have the factory mounts cut off and leaf spring mounts welded to the housing. It might not be the Ideal setup but is a budget V8 rear end.

Mine is a 1st gen Camaro so it has leaf spring mounts. Mine is a 10 bolt, a 12 bolt would be better. You can get these cheap sometimes from someone who is doing a 9" ford rear end swap. Posi-track would be nice. Their are C-Clip c- clip eliminators and are required by some drag race tracks and organizations.

I think their are some 8" fords that will work closely too.

to have the 3.42 gears it must have the MPG+ packege....
it was a 3.42 with a 4 speed.
all most all MPG+ LUV/pups, are short beds.

normal diesels have a 3.73 with a 14.5% O\D 5 speed.

4x4s are 4.11s and 4 speeds only tell 86/87

there is one odd ball to this rule though.....if its a CA spec LUV/PUP, it will have a 3.42 and the 5 speed.
why they did this is beond me

SO IN SHORT, FIND A DIESEL 81/82 2WD LUV/PUP WITH A 4SPEED YOU HAVE FOUND A 3.42 REAR END.

OH YEA 88/89 i-mark turbo cars have a LSD that fits them.
no luv/pup in the usa was sold with a LSD.

as to a 93 truck depends......
was it 2WD or 4WD 2.3L 2.6L or rare GM V-6 3.1L

all 2.3Ls have a 10 bolt but can be isuzu or a GM axil.
the 2.6 and V-6 3.1L are 12 bolt only i dont know if there all isuzu axils or not.

If im not mistaken the isuzu 7.5" Rear is the exact same as a toyota 7.5" (Really a Toyota 8"), in my 79 Chevy LUV 2wd.

Are you saying that all 2.3Ls have a 10 bolt but can be isuzu or a GM axil. some could be a real GM 10 bolt rear end?

If so there are a lot of cheap parts out there for a GM 10 bolt.

My '93 2wd 2.3 Pup has a GM 10bolt w/ 4.10s and my '91 2wd 2.3 Amigo had an Isuzu 10bolt w/ 4.56s. Both with drum brakes.
And I have a 3.42 gear from a 1.8 2wd gas in the classifieds.

6 lug I would guess. Very Cool. I wonder if it is the same width as a luv? 4:10 carrier might only let you go to 373 IIRC. There are actually a 8.2 and a 8.5 setup. So it depends on what series it is...

My memory ain't what it used to be....

They are wider than the LUV and I think the spring pads are further apart too.

only the 88/95 isuzu trucks with the 2.3L had the two diffrent axils.
after 87, ALL 2.3Ls are 2WD only.
oh yea 86 is the first 2.3L year.

any engine bigger than a 2.3L is a 12 bolt, any engine 2.3L or smaller is a 10 bolt.

all the 81/87 pups are isuzu axils only.

they where getting aruond the 25% taruff, it was only like 4%
bringing it in to the USA with no real axil.

they did the same thing only there was one type, with the troopers, (back seat) and pups, (cargo box)

thats why a 81/82 pup or luv says diesel or long bed or auto trans, in the rear, after about 82~
they stoped putting the diesel ECT stiker on them sence, they never new if they went on a gas or diesel auto.

would i still be able to use my stock axles if i get a rear end with the same spline count? im really wanting to keep the 6 lug so i can use the stock wheels. im trying to keep the stock look as close as possible and i love the look of the old ass wheels, tall white walls, and the stock hub caps.

or will the stock hubcaps fit other steel wheels? say in a s-10 bolt pattern if i pick up a 10bolt or 12bolt ...

PapaG- the Isuzu GM 10-bolts are 7.5" or 7.625", same thing used in S-10's, 6cyl Camaro's, '80s Olds Cutlass and the like. They are about the same strength as the Isuzu corporate 10-bolt, but parts are a lot more plentiful. They are 58" wide, LUV's are 54"
