Hi all, I keep trying to search but the search engine keeps omitting "3.42".

Basically what I'm trying to prepare for is a TDi swap down the road and I want to install a 3.42 so I can get better mileage right now and keep the RPMs low for the diesel after I install an R154 5-speed. I'm not going to bother purchasing and installing a LUV/PUP 5-speed because I would just be removing it again, anyways.

Was there a specific model/engine/trans combination that they were available on so I can narrow the search?

Also, I have to replace a lot of trim pieces. The rubber has all rotted away and I don't want to have any moisture issues. This is for a 76' model 2x4.

I found these on partstrain, but it's one of those websites where the pictures are all generic:

http://www.partstrain.com/ShopByDepartm ... VROLET/LUV

Basically, I need to replace ALL of the rubber trim in the doors and would like to buy a complete kit if they're sold. I saw posts about restoration specialties and P/N 990021 but I don't think it's all I need, which is basically everything in this pic:

Also, the rubber seals on all of my signal lamps (front/rear) are all crumbling. Are these even available or should I just get no lamp assemblies?

Still waiting on my weber to get in, so I'm tending to the other odds and ends. Thanks in advance, all!

1984 gas with 4spd was a special fuel saver model with a 3.42 rear. Try car-part.com, axle assembly rear, it will ask for the ratio & give salvage yard sources in your area.

I don't know what gear ratios are in the R154, but if the first gear is much higher than the stock Isuzu 5-speed, you might not want a 3.42. I have the Isuzu 5-speed and the 3.73 diff that always came with that transmission. At 65 mph, I'm turning ~2,700 RPM, which is no sweat. I've buried the 85-mph speedometer (probably about 90) and still wasn't at the 4,250 RPM redline. I'm assuming the TDI is a higher-revving engine than my C223, so I'm thinking the 3.73 may be perfect for you. And it's MUCH easier to find than the 3.42, since it came on every 2wd 5-speed P'up.

Edit: I found a photo, courtesy of "graydonblair" at the IsuzuPup.com forum. This one is with the speedo pegged at 85 mph. (Kids, don't try this at home!)

P.S. - I'm pretty certain his steering wheel is NOT indexed to point straight when the truck is going straight! Turn the wheel that much at 85, and it's doubtful whether you'd be around to post photos!

Well, the TDI has it's peak torque at ~1750rpm, and that's where I'd like to get close to when cruising at interstate speeds (70-75) and highway (55).

For example:

With a 3.42 rear, 27" tire height (just a guesstimate) and a .753 final gear ratio (R154 5th gear) I would turn 2404 rpm @ 75mph and 1763 rpm @ 55.

So around town I would almost be at my peak efficiency, so it should return some great mpg. The 3.73 would add an additional ~200 rpm anywhere in the band, which wouldn't be optimal. If I spent a fortune adapting a T56 it would be a non-issue with its .5 final. lol

Was the '84 the only available year for that diff?

And anyone have a clue about the window trim?

I'll hit up isuzupup.com for some info as well for the diff. Thanks smokey!
