I am currently putting in a 350 in my 75 Luv and need some advice. I don't have a lot of money (literally, less than $100) at the moment but starting a job this month. I'm putting this Image
into this
Image
That motor came out of a 1965 Chevy Biscayne
Image
and I'm using the old motor mounts on that which look a little like this
Image
The motor rested on two notches on the frame as shown
Image
I was thinking about cutting off the slabs on my pickup frame to make it look similar to the Biscayne's.
Image
The measurements of the motor mount for the motor was around 2 5/8 in. and the frame on my pickup was just 1/32 smaller than that. What do you guys think about it? Will it work?

If the pictures don't show, you can go to my photobucket page and sort of figure it out. And there's more pictures there so you can get a good idea what I'm looking at.

It may put the motor to far to the back. I have put a 327 in mine and I am using the Hooker motor swap kit for a LUV I got from SummitRacing.com. http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=HOK-12606HKR&N=700+4294925054+4294908216+4294905279+4294925130+115&autoview=sku

The mounts sit about 3" ahead of the old motor mounts and I had to massage the trans tunnel with a BFH. Here is a picture of the motor installed

Image

It doesn't show the stock motor mount location very well but it is located below the middle set of header tubes.

Here is a very good guide about the basic of the V8 LUV swap http://www.luvtruck.com/pdf/engswap.pdf

Also OldRob one of the members here does a nice set of bolt in motor mounts (the hooker ones are weld in)

Alright, so far I have accomplished this.

As you can see, the mounts don't quite fit on all the way but I think that it's because my pan is hitting what I think is called the "A Frame" (It's the last picture.) Do you guys have any suggestions on what I should do about this? Also take note of the turning bar located almost right underneath of the pulleys. It's right in between the motor and the pulley so I don't want to move it forward or back anymore than what it has to.

It looks like you have the engine hard mounted to the frame. Is it possible to raise the engine 1/2" or so? This should allow adequate oil pan/crossmember clearance and might even allow better clearance for the tie rod.

Yeah, I think that's what will be best for it. I'm trying to put it the motor and tranny right now and running into some minor problems mainly concerning with more firewall cutting but I think this project will get along quite nicely. Thanks for your help!

Does anyone know the advantages and disadvantages of hard mounting a motor?

Mine is solid motor mounts and no problem on the street but you have to be dead accurate on you fab work and you must also use a rubber trans mount to account for frame flex. You will feel and hear the harmonics from the motor but it's not bad.

I know this is a late post, but you should go to Old Rob's site, and check the archives here on Luv Truck. Both have detailed instructions on how to do the sbc swap.

With just a bit of planing it is possiable to install a small block without a hammer or cutting on the firewall and leaving the core support in.

It was not hard at all, installed motor and trans, got the angle I wanted and welded in the mounts. I also made the trans X-member removeable in case the trans has to come out. Like I said, plan ahead. It's not rocket science.

Short water pump and pulleys as well as the small dist. and no cutting of the fire wall is needed.

You're hitting the oil pan because you have the engine too low. The ideal position of the engine crankshaft center line should be the same as the original engines centerline.
The biggest advantage of using a engine mounting kit is, you don't have worry about placement and availability of exhaust. Also the included instructions are very helpfull in getting all the right parts the first time. It will be cheaper to do it right the first time, than the cost of doing it over or having something that is not fun to drive.
For racing solid mounting the front of the engines is fine. You are not concerned with all of the vibrations and noises you will have. For comfort on the street use engine cushions, after a long trip you'll be glad you did. Also the harmonics from the engine usually will cause other things to get loose.

If you pull the engine back out, and weld the firewall back together you will be miles ahead. Take some time to listen to what Old Rob is saying and go to his site. He has done over a hundred of these, and already has the parts much cheaper that you can buy them anywhere else. All the work has already been done for you, and all you have to do is add sweat and follow the directions. Another note: some collectors will pay you enough for that 65 327 to get you a good late model 350/350, or 350/700r4 if that's the direction you want to go in. Otherwise it would be a great little motor for the truck. I would even leave the powerglide behind it.

On some other cars and older trucks I have seen people use a metal wheel barrow as a firewall recess when they needed one. Of course it was welded in. My truck runs a HEI distributor.

Sorry it is not a good picture.
