Im running a 400 but I plan to swap to a 283, the 400's have steam holes in the head and they run hot. Plus the fact that its in a luv makes it even worse. It runs around 190-200 most of the time with a 19x22 griffin aluminum radiator.

I would reccomend a 383 over the 400

It really depends on what ur plans are I don't trust 400s for race engines personally unless your running a stock cylinder bore, I like 350s a lot never ran a 383 but I have a 400 long block layin around but a cylinder needs sleeved but I have been thinkin about robbin the crank and stuff.
In the end its up to you just read up on it.

You can build a very reliable 450hp 350 for pretty cheap, mines bone stock vortec with a plate system with 450 hp, runs like a bat outta hell at 160 degrees all day.

well hears an idea.

the 400 is a 4"by 4" bore\stroke the 383 is a shorter stroke so.

so also think about the gearing and LBs of the rig its going in; in cluding if its guna have a O\D, that can be as much as 500rpms if its a %25 O\D
what ever rig it is.....

my 0.01
to me i have thought of 400 engine as more of a work horse truck engine. not made to go over 3,500rpms or so in (stock) trim, haveing a bore\stroke that is bolth the same.
ive have thought of the 383 as a half way from 350 to 400 in terms of rpms the engine will turn.

but that just me.

:? Wrong 400 as its the Ford 400 that is 4. X 4. as the Chevy is 4.125 X 3.75 and the most of the heating problems i have found with the 400 is the POS stock so called water pump and the problem seams to go away with a good after market pump but there is always exceptions to the rule.

wow i thought they where the same.
then it would defnitly turn faster than 3,500 even with no mods.
so then how does that compare to a 383 or 350, its just the bore thats diffrent isent it.

i have allways been more in to the ford I-6 engines....but if a V-8 flots your boat, more power to ya.

350 = 4" x 3.48

383 = 4.030 x 3.75

400 = 4.125 x 3.75

377 = 4.155 x 3.48

352 = 4.155 x 3.25

I believe this is correct

Oh and my Buick 455 is 4.312 x 3.90

I remember those but were few as it was a standard bore 350 and most were used so the 383 and another .030 was a 388 those were the days when everybody was high on the 383-388s now it seem its the 540's that are beginning to be the norm.

Bigger problem was back then you had to have the crank welded up and then ground for the longer stroke. Big bucks. Today you ccan buy almost anything you want for building an engine or vehicle.

To the discussion on cubic inches, there is a saying "horsepower per pound to the ground" Can't tell how many times I've seen smaller engined vehicles out run the bigger ones. How big depends on how much more you're going to do, particularily with the rear suspension. Narrowed frame, 9" rear, 4 link or ladder with wiiiiiiiide tires you can go big. Basically stock rear with traction bars then big will just get you a lot of smoke and one expensive ticket. I know in CA and exhibition of speed, racing, unsafe start type of tickets stay on your DMV report like forever. Another factor to consider for a daily driver is fuel milage. I've built some low 11 second trucks that got almost 20 mpg. Last one I built was a Courier that can be seen on www.photobucket.com/v8courier
