When installing a floor shifter for an auto tranny, can it be mounted on the original spot or does it need to be moved? I am using a 700r4. Did any Camaros come with a 4 spd auto so I can use its shifter or should I just buy one from Summit?

When you say "original spot" do you mean you had a stock auto tranny? Or are you talking about installing a shifter over the hole from the stock manual lever?

Over the original spot for the 4 spd manual shifter.

It's really not a good spot for an auto shifter. The assy will sit too far forward and when the shifter is in park, the handle will be interfered by the heater control panel. The stock GM type of shifters can be fitted to the back side of the transmission hump. Most cars were setup with a cable assy. It can be manipulated to suite the truck. Getting or fabricating a bracket at the tranny pan is the biggest issue with using a stock type shifter. It looks like a box sitting in the cab but you can make a cover for it .

I have a 700r4 in mine and i used a B&M mega shifter (got it from an old roommate). It was a tight fit between the stock bench and the heater controls but it does work. not the best pic but oh well.

I had to move mine back. its hard to grab the shifter when its in park and you are tighly strapped in to your seat with Simpsons. ergonomics is better for regular driving if you move it back. I would recommend an aftermarket shifter too. sit in your seat, lean against the back rest, put the shifter on the hump where it feels comfy and mark it. drill it, install it.
