Does anybody have a luv with a 3.8 v6?
I pulled a 3.8 roller cam block out of a 87 lasaber.
It's a great motor, I found the mounts to swap on summit.
My only question is will a 700-r4 or turbo 400 mount to a 3.8?
I want to keep my 4x4 so what front diff should I bolt up?
I need to keep a six lug pattern for the 16 inch alloys I have.

It all depends on what you want to do with it.
Is is going to be a street rod, the 4x4 there just to give you a larger area with which to put power to the ground, or
is it going to be an off-road rig, with all the fixin's you can afford, or
does it just need more power, and you don't want to do anything more then make a very capable daily driver?

What you run all depends on what you want to do.

Yes both trans will work but you do not want to use the th400 as it takes way to much power to run compared to the 700r so your best choice is the 700r for the low first gear (3.06) or the 200r4 for the better over drive.I prefer the 700r for the gears and transfer case choices like the earlier 208 for the lightweight and steeper low range (2.08 i think)

i have recently found out that mine has a 79 3.8 in it its got a th 350 trans and a d35 front axle with luv brakes and its a 6 lug. the d35s arent well known for heavy stress on trails but for basic 4x4 use its fine. im not sure what t case is in it. man it would be nice if i could figure out who built this truck lol.

I live in Montana, so when a guy goes fishing on hunting, or it's 35 below 4x4 is nice.
Thats a good idea though, I think I'll go with a 700r4 since I have one laying around.
My basic idea is to have a luv that isn't so underpowered.
Mostly what I think I need is matching front and rear diffs so I have close to a 50/50 ratio with four wheel drive.

I think I could just find an 4x4 S10 and use the axles off of it.
I'm sure their a 5 lug pattern though, I could always use the spindles off my 91 parts silverado that I got the rims off of.

If you are going to convert the 4X4 the best setup would be the Toyota axles and springs. The S-10 would be very difficult and the drive is on the driver side as the luv drives on the pass. side. The stock 4X4 luv axles would work with a 3.8 or if you want a stronger setup then the Trooper axles would work but again you need to adapt the front axle setup or use the complete chassis and adapt the luv body to the trooper chassis.
There are lots of alternatives it's just up to your skill levels and the size of your bank account.

wouldnt an 87 buick v6 block have a 60* bellhousing pattern? if its from a lasabre, than its was a FWD motor, which im pretty sure were 60* pattern.
