Managed to get the driverside on  . Does the driverside torsion bar have to come off to get the header in with the motor in the truck ?

I THINK I remember Ben saying he could never get the headers in with the motor in.

It is way easier to pull the torsion bars than fight it .

I don't know on a Luv. but I had a Dodge Dart with a 340. The first set of headers that had a tube that you could remove to get around pulling the torsion bars lasted 2 years. The 2nd set lasted as long as I owned the car, but you had to pull the torsion bars. It was a lot easier than I thought. I broke one before then, and it wasn't as hard as I thought. I later put 6 cylinder bars on it for drag racing.

Pull the bar.

I have an 80 4X4. When I installed My 4.3 I tryed to use the hooker headers but the headers hit the bars. I couldn't istall the headers with the eng in and could't install the eng with the headers on. so I used the stock 85 C-10 tub manifold that came with the eng. I have a 79 4X4 and have throught about installing a 94 5.7. I am planning on finding a set of block hugers headers if I ever get that far.

The Hooker Headers that I have used are made for a chevy v8 swap into a 72-80 Luv. These have a two piece header for the right side so you won't have to remove anything to install them. The back tube, number 8 cylinder, goes over the frame and connects back into the headers by the starter. This facilitates removal of the starter too, if you ever have to change it.
You will have to cut away a small part of the inner fender to install this tube. I have also trimed the left side inner fender so I can replace the oil filter easier, I just cannot get the filter out through the bottom, no room between the block, headers and torsion arm!
AS suggested, go to the article included here and read up on the Hooker system.

Hope this helps,
dusty-scjconv
