Hi, I have a 1977 luv truck step side and I was wondering if anyone knows if a 4 speed Muncie tranny will fit into the truck with a small block Chevy? Is there enough room underneath? Is there a manual conversion kit for a muncie? Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!!

No kits for a manual transmission. You need some skill in fabrication. It has been done before. I like a manual transmission. I would do one with one if I do another one. More trouble than the automatic. 80% of my cars have been manual transmissions.
A 5speed or 6speed would make since for street use and some fuel economy. But that all depends on the "nut" between the steering wheel and the seat

Ask questions here. Good luck and have fun!!!!!!!

Grandmaster of the "Shade Tree" way.. I can't see the yard for all the cars. Come on down and we will sit on the porch and watch the grass grow.

Its less trouble than some.

At least the Luv came with both cable and hydraulic clutch. That helps a fair bit.

i did a saginaw tranny in mine before i went with a 5 speed for a taller gear, um the clutch is the most important deal i made a bracket for a s-10 slave cylinder with a 2.8 liter motor, it worked really good but the stock luv master doesnt have enough throw to it so i went with a wilwood 3/4 clutch master cylinder, and i used 3/16th brake line and with a piece of allthread for a clutch rod all in all i really liked it. now im bored with the 4.3 liter and want to switch back to a muncie and go with a v-8.

When i first built my trk. with the 283 i used a chevy monza bellhousing and modified the cable length and it was like it was made for it.And i do still have the bell but the cable is missing :x

With the 455 buick because of my headers being in the way i covertd it over to a hyd. using a wilwood master and pull type slave. And i run a super T-10

It would not be hard to modify the cable holder to make it take a std cable.

I have struck it a few times on I-marks. The inner is too long, adjusting it out on the firewall means the outer is not held properly (deep enough in the socket) and it cocks sideways. A bit of tube the right size and boring out the hole in the cable bracket down on the motor end and then press in the bit of tube.
Have not seen the problem on a pup or trooper.

Cheers, Bob.

How easy was the willwood master cylinder to fit???

You probably could get the Luv one bored out and fit a bigger piston to it. You would have to find a brake place that knew what they were doing, that would be the hard part.

when i went to the hyd. setup i found that the firewall was already marked and set on the inside of the cab so i took the right size hole saw and drilled fromthe inside out the drilled the bolt holes. the i installed the pedal asy. from an earlier hyd. LUV. installed the wilwood master then built a brackit and bolted to the frame to hold the wilwood pull type slave. Of course i hab to cut a hloe in the clutch arm with a plasma torch and used a chevy rocker arm ball for the pivot and with everything inline it bworks smooth and light pedal pressure.

As for the cable setup the housing fit like it was made for the trk. so i backed off the adjustment made a new pin for the pedal and marked then i brazed the cable in the pin adjusted and the rest is history.

Would a 5 spd from a 4.3 V6 work with a mildly built SBC?

you know rodeo when i did mine i just had to enlarge the original bolt holes a bit, the master cylinder hole was fine. but i also had to modify the clutch pedal rod because the new master had american threads but thats a no brainer, as far as boring sounds good the only thing i had huge problems with is the stock internally wasnt long enough to totally disengage the clutch if need be ill shoot you some pics

The V-6 Trans may last as long as you don't get in the throttle as it is a weak trans and a V-8 can blow it up at full power just driving down the road.Just for the record a friend of mine put a V-6 5-sp in a Toyota that had a stock 350 180hp motor and the trans blew up in the first 2 blocks.

Find one out of a V-8 car and save your money and you will injoy it for a long time.
