Hey guys, I've just started gathering bits for my '73 Luv.

i bought a 307 block with some goodies for a good price, so small cubes it is.

i've dropped the block off at my machinist and these are the plans so far:

using original crank, stock 400 rods (5.565) paired up with 283 speedpro forgies, a little bit will need to be taken off the block to get the compression up, but i think it should be a good thing.

i also scored a pair of double hump (fuelie?) heads with small valves.

also along the way i picked up a edelbrock performer manifold and a barry grant speed demon 650

im not really after huge power figures (silly idea for a 307) but i think once i put the rest of the pieces of the puzzle togethor this should be a damn fun engine in my luv, maybe a little better on fuel than a bigger cube engine and definately still a hell of a lot of fun when you hit the loud pedal.

thoughts?

three oh block scorn not required thanks.

:)

If you use that 307 crank in a 350 block, you can use the stock 350 rods and get some 327 pistons, it might be cheaper, and the rod angle ratio would be better. IF you already have the pistons though...

Also, on the heads, if they are 327 fuelies, then the valves may not clear the bore, that 283 is a small bore. If they are 283 power pack heads, they most likely don't have the hardened seats for todays unleaded fuels. You might want to consider a set of mid 80's LG4 305 heads, they don't flow any worse than those old 60's heads and they are set up for unleaded and you might not have to unshroud the valves as the 305 bore is small also. They would work with the manifold you have. Or you could get a set of the 305 Vortecs and get a new intake to match...

the valves clear nicely and the heads already have been modified by a past owner as they have hardened inserts fitted.

i considered going bigger bore as the water jackets on this block are in awesome shape and the sonic test came up a winner, but the 307 came out in several sought after high performance vehicles here in aus so i figure once i have bolted a strong engine togethor, if i really want to go bigger, i could get a better dollar selling a strong numbered 307 than a mongrel. (even though i am changing rod length and pin height).
