Hi all,
I posted questions in another thread trying to get tranny info: viewtopic.php?f=6&t=17135

I got part of the answer, but before I got back to reply the thread was locked. I had already done a pretty thorough search on this forum, plus Oz Gemini, plus 3 other Isuzu forums, and checked with 4 online transmission parts vendors. Haven't yet found out the exact model of 4 speed transmission in the early LUV, or exactly which tranny may be the later.

Some say early uses MUA, others say later uses MUA. Some say early is MSG, others say later is MSG. Another claimed the early trans is an MUA-4, later is MSG-4. No help.

As mentioned in the other thread it's the early '72-'75 engine with intake/exhaust both on driver's side. Looks like I'll be stuck with this trans, but it's in good shape. For long term use I'd really like to know exactly what model transmission this is, so I can get correct parts if needed. Not sure if bellhousing flywheel, input shaft, pilot bearing, throw-out, or exactly what may be different from the later tranny installations. Accurate info on this application would be appreciated if you have it, thanks!

MSG is the earlier of the two you mentioned.
The MUA is from behind a 2.6L and it is the later gearbox and considerably heavier than the MSG. I do believe that you could get this in a LHS starter model from behind diesel engines. You definately can with the MSG box from behind a C190 and C223.

You can also swap the front housing of a MSG gearbox over. So if you cant find a 5 speed with the starter on the LHS you can use the housing off a 4 speed and put that on the front of a RHS starter 5 speed.

I emailed someone i know to find out what the real early box is called. I was told once but i forget.

It has reverse gear next to first. As opposed to the MSG box which has reverse gear next to 4th.

Uh oh, here we go again....
Mine has reverse back and to the left, next to 2nd gear! Maybe not MSG or MUA. Like I've said, confusing.

He is not sure what they are called but is going to find out.

Apparently theres 2 or 3 different early boxes.

Okay, thanks guys! Now, help the comprehension challenged: MSE what? Isuzu MSE, Aisin MSE, any clues to track it down? I'll try to search the net in the meantime.

If I didn't mention, I'm building a rig to keep. Changing tranny is no problem, or stocker will work fine. Either way I'd like to know what will bolt in to replace, that's good and is available, or what to do for future parts for this chunk. Thanks for the help!

2.Is there a major reason for sticking with that particular engine?

Contrary to my title I am no LUV guru by any means,I learn something new everyday here.
But from my understanding the newer Isuzu engines are much better and you have more drivetrain options.

Also used in 1st gen Holden Gemini TX, reverse is indeed over to left and back!

it sounds like the tranny is also called an M20, just to confuse things more.

Nah that would just be on the 'Australian" General Motors Holden compliance plate. Manual 4 speed transmissions were called M20's in all cars. Close ratio gearsets got it M21, the Muncie rockcrusher was M22. The 5 speed was M72 or something silly like that.
MSE or MSG they were both M20 on the compliance plate AFAIK.


Its an isuzu MSE.
