Look at the front of the engine. Where the pulleys are. See it if the engine runs clock wise or counter clockwise. That will tell you if it will swap or not ant keep the same rearend or not. You must do the same thing on the engine you are going to replace... If they turn the same, ok if different then no. Look at the pulley on the crankshaft .

KEEP your head, hands and clothes and all your stuff away from anything that moves!!
DO this at your own risk.!

You know why I said that....

ok well good news everyone it looks like I am deffinetly going to be doing this swap.
I was worried for a few minutes there about not being able to use the stock luv rear end because I heard the engines spin the incorrect way but it turns out they both spin clockwise so yep yep I am happy again.

only bummer part is how much the ecu and getting it matched with a key is gonna cost along with the gauges

the gauges are going to cost me about $1000
the ecu is about $150 on ebay
the reflashing of the ecu is going to cost about $150 from a place 4 hrs away

anyone have any cheap places for electronic gauges I preffer autometer ultra lite
I need a tach 5" or 3 3/8 that goes up to 10k
speedo thats 5" or 3 3/8 that is electrical not cable driven and goes to 200mph
oil pressure 2 1/16"
fuel same size
volts
water temp

Sounds like you've got about the same problem as I do. I was gonna try to put a Chevy Corvair engine in a V-Dub. The engine spins the wrong way. One of the solutions is to re-cam the engine so it'll run backward. Just make the valves operate to the time of a reverse spin. Of course the accessories wouldn't work, unless they can spin backward...
I don't know, but a truck with 4 speeds of reverse sounds pretty original!

Ask a VeeDub transmission guy.
You can mount the diff together wrong by accident and that gives you 1 fwd and 4 rev gears with the std VeeDub motor.
My mate did it by accident when he was a young tacker.

I think its pretty common to swap shit about for making desert racers etc.

Bob.

I have done this several times when I worked at a VW dealer.

I first will say I never did an engine swap, just replaced it, but I happen to have a good running van with a FWD V6 3.0 in it. I wonder if it could be modified to go RWD in a Luv. BTW, this is a Dodge Grand Caravan with a Mitsubishi engine. It's fuel injected, and run with a computer.

I hope it's okay to throw this out here Savageluv. I use Photobucket for my image host.
