Hello!!

I just purchased a 1979 Luv truck 4x4. It has a 4 speed transmission. The engine seems to be winding out at 55 mph, and I bought it for good mileage, and the 4x4-plus it is the year of my birth, and my father used to own one (But a two wheel drive).

I heard that for that year (1979) that Isuzu melded the transfer case AND transmission into one aluminum cast unit.. Well, if I want to upgrade to a 5 speed (Which seems to be only on the second gen, 1981 and on) that I have to go with a second gen transmission setup.

My question is this. How difficult is it to put a 5 speed into my truck? I have the opportunity to buy a Toyota 4x4, but I absolutely love this truck, and I really want to make this thing work. Also, gear vendors (A gear splitter) said they do not have a setup for my truck. Which means if I am stuck, I would have to change out the differentials to gear the truck lower to get better mileage out of it. It would be great to drive this little thing as far as I do (600 miles) at a time.

I greatly appreciate any and all information provided.

Thank you all!!!

Hello everyone,

I found out that I need to lengthen the front driveshaft by 2 inches and shorten the rear by 1 and 1 half inches. I found out this is around $186 dollars at a shop.

I also found out that the 5 speed out of a Trooper should bolt up to a 4 cyl 1.8. I need to move or replace the transmission crossmember (And carrier bearing, if applicable), and modify the floorpan.

I have tow questions, can I use both driveshafts out of the trooper, and drive the LUV, or do I have to drive another vehicle while the driveshafts from the LUV are being modified?

Also, I read that the tranny and transfer case in the 79 4x4 are one unit. Are the tranny and transfer case in the Trooper one unit, too, and if not, can I use a 5 speed form a 2wd and get a transfer case from a Trooper later?

Does anyone have a tranny and xfer case from a trooper they want to sell? PM me.

Thanks guys!!

Dave
