I've got the Pertronix all installed. The timing is set at 6* BTDC. When I open the secondaries, I get a ping. I've got regular (87 octane) gas in it. Any suggestions other than run the high octane?

The idea of this truck is to save $ on my commute

If it was my truck, I would start in order:

1. Plugs - the hotter the better
2. Plug wires
3. Re-tune the carb - this is probably your problem

Even after installing your ignition, your compression shouldn't be high enough to cause pinging on regular pump gas. Check the obvious first, and trouble shoot one at a time. Good luck.

What does the timing go to when you rev the engine?

Sounds like the thing is advancing into next week. It's not unheard of. I've seen a stock HEI just keep advancing and advancing up to 6000 RPM where we gave up.

I guessing it shouldn't see over like 40 deg max on pump gas, and that should be by like 3000 RPM min. Someone else can correct me if they know what these engines like to see for total advance.

BTW, you'll probably need a timing light with a dial on it to check the high RPM timing. You may also need another body to monitor the tac and gas pedal. :)

Yea, Ben. That's what I was thinking also. I used to have a stock dist. that acted like the springs were weak and it would let the timing advance go way up. I'll look into it.

Does anybody know what the timing should be at when advanced at high rpm?

Senor Chilton sayeth about timing:

Ser.1 6@700
Ser.2 8@700
Ser.3 12@700
Ser.4 12@900
Ser.5-12 6@600

There isn't anything in there about max advance. The only other thing I was was something about a "Coasting Rich" relay system. Do you need anything on intake and exhaust valves?

No thanks. I've got a book. I don't know what it is. It runs great with a ton of power. But if I get into the secondaries under accel. it pings. I can let out a little and it won't. It's a new rebuilt dist. with a Pertronix conversion.

12 degrees BTDC is the best timing setting for a G180, and you're probably on the right track about the darn thing advancing too much. That would sure as hell make it ping a lot.

Maybe this might help:

if you have a dial timing light, check what total advance is should be maxed by 4000 rpm's I would say keep it somewhere around 35-37 total.
