Looks good.

Couple questions because I'm looking at doing the same thing soon.
1. Now that you have the freedom of placement that the hydralic slave offers, why did you change the fork to the passenger side? Wouldn't it have been easier to just install the cylinder where the clutch fork originally was?

2. What master cylinder are you using with this unit?

3. What are you going to mount the fixed end to? I'm anxious for your next pictures. :D

4. The specifications online show that this unit has a maximum extended length of 11.5". What is the minimum extended length? I'm trying to fit it between the existing bracket for the cable clutch and the clutch fork which is about 7".

Thanks,
Eric Q.

I DONT SEE WHY YOU COULD'NT KEEP IT ON THE DRIVERS SIDE. YOU WOULD HAVE TO REROUTE THE STOCK HYDRAULIC LINE. I'M GOING TO TRY THE STOCK 76 CLUTCH MASTER CYLINDER. THE REASON IS THAT I PUT IT ON THE PASSANGER SIDE THAT'S WHERE THE 76 IS. AS FOR MOUNTING IT'S GOING TO THE FRONT SIDE OF THE DUST PLATE WHERE THE STOCK SLAVE CYLINDER WOULD MOUNT. HERE IS MOCK UP OF THE MOUNTING THE SLAVE CYLINDER COMES WITH A ROD ( IT 'S IN THE PIC ON THE TABLE) THAT CAN BE REPLACED BY A SHORT 5/16 FINE THREAD BOLD AT THE FRONT OF THE SLAVE CYLINDER. UPDATE.... BOLTED THE TRANNY TO THE OLD ENGINE TO CHECK OUT THE THROW AND I HAVE TO PUT SOME SPACERS ABOUT 1" 1/2 ...

Nice looking fabrication work.

That totally makes sense.

Cool. That will shorten it down a lot. What is the purpose of the rod? Is it meant as a mounting point? From the pictures, it doesn't look as though you are making use of it. Or maybe I'm just not seeing it.

I was wondering about this. The stock clutch master cylinder is a 5/8" bore and has 1.25" throw. The stock slave cylinder is 3/4" bore so I assume it will have a throw of less than 1.25".

How much throw is generally required to engage a clutch?

Good luck and keep the pictures and updates coming.

eric, i think you really only need about 1" throw for the clutch to ingage. as for the 5/16 bolt ,that would be used as a fixed point. i made my own and the 5/16 bolt does not serve any purpose, but to plug the hole . i put a locking nut on the bolt . if i have to, i will put a different master cylinder on it, one with more volume. i.e. 7/8 or 1" . Also check out speedwaymotors.com they have pull style for less and in different bore sizes. i keep you informed on the progress of this. Lastly i have a ideal about mounting a different way. l let you know on that, it will be cleaner .....AZDUDE

To Tumwatertaz. Could you post pics and descriptions of the mods you have done to your engine? I am still researching the route I want to take with my LUV. It dosen't look like I will be going with a V8, rather a four cylinder. I do want it to be pepy and accelerate faster than a smart car, but dosen't need to beat Corvettes (yet). I have a friend of my neice that told me to get with him in January with what I want, and he will get it for next to nothing (if anything) if I drop his 383 and tranny in his S10. So guess what? Hello S10! Building up the LUV engine with parts from Austrailia seems to be cost prohibitive. Sorry guys! Also, with this engine and tranny topic, maybe others could use the info.

just put the trans and the rearend out of the 89 into the 76 and the hydraulic clutch seems to work okay. but the driveline for the 89 is to long and has a bigger u joint than the 76 anyone know if they make a ujoint that has a small side and a big side. thanks the dude

you mean the newer 26 spline and the small drvie line in one yoke :?: :?:

Quote:
a few available options where you might find the 26 count spine for the upgrade and will also have the small u-joint: I know they're still somewhat vague, but..
81-87 4x4
86-87 2wd & 4wd 2.3 gas 5 speed (not positive on the 2wd)
84-87 trooper (4x4) w/ 2.0, & 2.3 & diesel
any 4x4 yokes through 87
and…possibly 86-87 2.3 automatics.
The automatics from 88-95 were 2.6. The spline will work (26ct), but will have the large u-joint.
Just count the splines to make sure before going through with the swap.
Andy

(I apologize for the cruddy looking engine compartment. These pics were taken a while ago before I cleaned it up a bit.)

My engine in my '78 stepside is a rebuilt de-smogged G200z out of an Impulse. Taller flat top pistons are stock with that engine, the head was slightly milled, I have installed a custom designed Delta cam, a higher output oil pump, an Offy intake, a Weber 38/38, a Pacesetter header, a 50 amp alternator, an electronic distributor/ignition module, an Accell high output coil (with accel plugs, wires, etc.), and 2/12 inch exhaust connected to a "cherry bomb" glasspack with a cheapo muffler behind it and then ending with a flowmaster resonator tip. (That gives it a healthy sound and more importantly - it gives my engine the best possible back pressure to result in maximum low-end torque. I later installed an oil catch tank because I constantly drive it hard (like a tijuana cab driver....lol) and I got tired of wiping oil off of the valve cover.

It isn't the word's fastest truck - but with the newer rear end and 5 speed out of an Isuzu Pup I installed, it still gets good enough gas mileage (even though I have to burn premium or it pings like the dickens....lol) for my wallet - and it gets me around town and through traffic easily.

Sooooo Nice! Last question, what car or truck does the acceleration compare to so I can get a good idea of performance?

Wow...that's a real tough question. I guess I never gave that much thought.

I guess all I can say is...

It gets right with the program off the line, will break the tires loose easily, and getting second gear scratch is not much of an effort at all. And since it's awful light in the tail - it gets real squirrelly in the rain if you romp on it much either on a hill or around any tight corners - a fact that makes my wife hesitant to ride with me and too scared to drive it much when it's wet outside.

(It also eats wing-toting, fart-can sounding, ground-effects packing, tons-of-huge-speakers-in-the-back-and-too-many-amps-carrying Ricers for breakfast...lol)

But is it the fastest small/import truck or car around? Absolutely not.

But for the amount of $$ I have invested - it sure beats any other little truck or car I've seen both in performance, in handling, in dependability, and in style. And it still puts a big smile on my face every time I drive it.

That works out just fine for me.

So....I freely admit it. I'm addicted to my truck....lol
