Yes, it is hydraulic. How easy is it to change over to the cable? Again, Im not mechanically inclined. But i can weld if needed.

You should have bought the Impulse transmission from pezfallout. It was just what you need. I'm not sure, but it might be easier to convert your truck to cable than convert this transmission to hydraulic. You'd need the cable clutch assembly and the cable...maybe something to make a hole in the firewall, and close up the one where your clutch master cylinder is.

It is bolted. There were two different assemblies used in the '81 LUV and P'up. One had a single bracket with both clutch and brake. The other had two separate brackets. All were bolted in, not welded. Sorry, I don't have a suggestion on what to do, because I don't know what your original was like. However, I do have a bell housing from an Impulse that should bolt up to your transmission. It's 5-speed, and your LUV is set up for a hydraulic clutch, it should fit. I do not have the clutch fork, release bearing, or the slave cylinder. Just the bell housing and the bearing retainer and pivot ball.

804wdluv- yes, as long as it is from an '86 or '87 Trooper with the 2.3L gas engine or P'ups with the same drivetrain. The LUV crossmember will have to be relocated, the 5sp is longer. Make sure to get both driveshafts from the donor also, the front will be longer, the rear has a different splined end that must be mated to your shaft.
Use the search function, a member has a good writeup with pic's on how to do all this.

Unless I'm mistaken, the fine (27-tooth) spline was used on the old 4-speed 4wd transmissions, so it should not be an issue. But you're right about the length being different, and if the donor is a Trooper, the driveshaft probably would not work. He may just have to get his driveshaft shortened.

Maybe some useful info:
In the US all 2wd pickups with the 2.3L gas engine/5sp used the same MSG-5 cable clutch tranny from '86 through '95, the 5sp is the same length as the 4sp, the 4sp has an extended tailshaft housing, this area is occupied by 5th gear on the 5sp. The 5sp has a different splined tailshaft, both spline count and diameter.
These same year trucks with that engine/tranny combo all came with either a corporate Isuzu 10-bolt rear (with and without RAB) or a GM 7.5-7.625" 10-bolt rear end, all with drum brakes. The FI 2.6L engines came with a MUA hydraulic clutch tranny and an Isuzu 12-bolt differential. The track width increased by 4" in '88 but the spring attachment points are only about 1" farther apart than the earlier models, it looks like the springs would bolt up without relocating the spring mount pads.
It may be that you don't have to swap pinion yokes to mate up your new driveshaft. I replaced the two-piece driveshaft in my '87 Trooper with a shortened one-piece from a '92 2wd pickup with the GM rear. The driveshaft flange mated to the stock pinion yoke flange but each had a different size connecting bolt hole. I drilled out the pinion yoke to 3/8" from 8mm to match the driveshaft flange. The new shaft has Spicer geaseable u-joints that are a lot larger than stock.

The 86-87 Trooper front drive line is a bolt in with the 5 spd swap and the rear drive line needs to be shortened about 2 3/4".

Cut the stock LUV X-member out and use the Trooper X-member. You can shorten and drop the Trooper X-member to make a cleaner fit.

I have pic's posted for this 5 spd swap.

I am glade to help those who need it with this swap and believe me it is well worth it.

Unless I'm mistaken, you're asking us to start this thread over again for you. Have you read all pages of this topic?

This thread already has your answer, but you have to know what engine was in the donor truck.

It's easy to tell which engine was in the truck: cable clutch, clutch arm on the left- 2.3 w/MSG tranny; hydraulic clutch, slave and clutch arm on the right- 2.6 w/MUA tranny.
The MSG tranny is the one you want to swap into a LUV.

All that's true, but I think there was also a GM V6 in '91.

There's a place for that. Post that question HERE.

I hate to see any topic hijacked, but ESPECIALLY one that is important enough to be a "sticky" topic.
