There's no mention of transmission gear ratios in this thread.

Has anyone got a gear ratio chart, comparing the LUV 4-speed to the Pup 5-speed?

Also, a little Off-Topic, but since the subject has come up in this thread...do the Isuzu "Z" series engines interchange with the "G" series engines...in terms of the motor mounts? will a 2.3 or 2.6 bolt into my '75 LUV?

so you can literally swap parts from an GM which is the equivalent of any Isuzu? All but rebadge Chevy from Isuzu itself.

Have a question about all the 5-speed swapping. I have a 79 longbed with stock 1.8 4-speed setup. Also have a 5-speed from an 88 or 89 P'up that was a 2.3, so the cable setup was the same. The input shaft has more splines than the LUV 4-speed. Is there a clutch kit I can buy to make this work, or do I need an older 5-speed?

Will the stock speedo work with the 5 speed from the 4 speed or do I need to calibrate it

No. Yes. That all depends on what the 5-speed came from, and what you're driving.

From what I read here so far the easiest drivetrain swap for a 76 LUV would be anything before 87?

If I had an 89 Pickup would I be able to transplant the entire drive train? (My 76 has a seized engine and the tranny was close to dead too)

Can I use the 89 Pickup 4 cyl. engine with the same motor mounts already in my 76 LUV?

I understand the Pickup drive line will have to be shortened since it's coming out of a long bed PUP and my LUV is short bed.

Then I would use the LUV's rear leaves for the Pickup rear axle?

Would I also need to take the Pickup's master cylinder?

IF you had one, you'd have the ONLY one. There were no PUPs after '87.

i have seen a chart, will look for it again but the 1-4th are the same and the 5th is .855 so 14.5% overdrive

Here's some more, from that thread...
Code:
Gas      Turbo DSL     NON-Turbo DSL   Turbo Impulse
1ST   3.431       3.785          4.122            3.431
2ND   1.969       2.171          2.493            1.963
3RD   1.364       1.413          1.504            1.364
4TH   1.000       1.000          1.000            1.000
5TH    .855        .855           .855             .755

I _believe_ the column labeled as "Gas" refers to the transmissions AFTER 1986, but I'm not certain. I do know that there were MAJOR changes in the '86 and later MSG-5 transmissions including a different countershaft ratio, which would affect 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 5th gear ratios. If someone needs it, I can look at my shop manual and see what it says for the 1983 gas and diesel P'up, and it should be the same for all 1981-1985 transmissions. But I always try to discourage people from using the 1981-1985 transmissions because they were pretty failure-prone. That's why they were modified in 1986. The '86-up transmission is much stronger.

Tom,

Someone here may already know, but I don't. So let's figure out what transmission is in your truck now. I know the diesels had a Borg Warner transmission that was the same as other Chevy/GM vehicles. If yours has that, forget the Isuzu transmissions and get a T-5. If it has the Isuzu transmission, it will have at least an Isuzu logo somewhere on the housing. Can you check?
