Small world... I am looking into the same thing. Found an 89 Trooper here too with auto trans. has a 2.6L EFI engine, started raining before I could do any crawling around under it. Seats and wheel/tires are promising tho. Guy wants $500 for it.

You sure about that????

Trans is heaps longer than a 4 speed. Trans is mounted on a different crossmemebr arrangment. IE: the chassis is different.
Different tailshaft and different jack shaft.

Diff is wider. Has crap park/E brake. One that uses the discs.

Front and rear diffs are bigger. The front is the size of your rear one now.

You will have to make sure the ratios are the same.

Would be worth messing with but it would take time to do.

Cheers, Bob.

Yea i do know that the drive lines and the crossmember need modified but thats not that hard to do (well for me anyway).I was looking at the axles to swap but they look to wide (haven't measured yet) and cutting and fabing are one of the things i do like to do.Hell i have the equipment i might as well use it right.

pretty dang sure...one guy here has already swaped over the Trooper 5-speed..and I'm in the process of doing it myself. Another guy here has swaped over the Trooper 12 bolt rear...so really the only thing in the bunch that hasn't been swaped over yet is the engine...but if you have a look at the G180 and then at the 4ZE1 you'll see that they are very much alike and that with a little mixing and matching of motor mounts you *could* get the 4Z to bolt in. As to the drive shaft issues...the Luv tranny and the Trooper tranny both have the same spline count on the tail shaft...meaning the Luv drive shaft will fit right in the Trooper tranny's tail...all you need to do is have the Luv's drive shaft shortened about 1.5-2" and away you go :D

The few documented swaps used the 5spd from behind a 2.3L, an MSG not a MUA found in an 89. It will bolt to the motor, but clutch parts may need to be mixed and the MUA is setup for a hydro clutch. You'd have to get creative to make a cable work, or swap all the hydro clutch parts from an earlier LUV. I think it actually makes the crossmember fabwork a little easier though, but don't quote me on that.

The rear axle will be 4.56 gears most likely, which won't match your 4.10 LUV front. Swapping the front axle would be very cool, but a lot of work. You could get the front diff out of a 84-86 Trooper and get 4.56 gears that will bolt into a LUV front diff. The width should not be too big of an issue but something to consider.

Look on the firewall of the Trooper and see if the option code plate is still there. Should be under the hood, and I think sort of toward the passsenger side from center. Post what option codes it has (like G80, etc) and I could tell you if the gears are 4.77s or if it happens to have shipped with an LSD.

Im doing the same to mine but with the trooper II diff with the dicky disc brake, park brake.

The whole Trooper II (smashed and blown motor) owes me $175 so id be mad not to.
But ive got a few Trooper LSD's here that i could use too.

Its a dilema.

rezkid, I didnt mean it couldnt be done. I was more meaning its not a bolt in swap. Theres a fair few mods to do.

If you fit the Trooper II or TF diff you will need the tailshaft. The pinion flange is bigger.

The 5 speed box is more than 1.5-2" longer than the 4speed. Its more like 4-5".
A 4 speed 4x4 box is the same length as a 2x4 4 and 5 speed.

That will make the jackshaft (front shaft) to short so you will need to modify one. Or change to Trooper II front diff and make it all work. I would say the same thing here with the pinion flange.

You can buy an air locker for the bigger Trooper II/TF diff. That in the back and a Trooper LSD in the front. Id say you would want manual hubs if doing this.

Alright now i'm getting some where, so far as of now i think i will try and get the whole thing and use as much as i can. By the way can the EFI 2.6 be made to run with a carb setup? And as for the clutch setup that is a piece of cake as the swap from cable to hyd. is what i had to do on my Pro Street Luv.If you look at the fire wall from the inside you can see the spot for the hyd. master cyl. and just use a hole saw to cut it out then get a hyd. clutch pedal and its done. Now all i have to do is wait for the paper work to go through (about 2 weeks ) and the fun will begin.

The older 2.3 carb intake is a direct bolt up to a 2.6 I believe.

Im of the same opinion but

The 2.3L manifold has a cut out for the fuel pump to bolt up directly under the carb. You need to plate this as the hole for the pushrod (its plugged on a 2.6L) and the oil drain back are in the 2.6L head. The face of the 2.6L manifold is flat and covers the mechanical pump holes.

Seeing as its going in a luv there will be an electric fuel pump at the tank already so im tipping you wont need a fuel pump. If you do you will have to unbolck the pushrod hole in the 2.6L head and get all the gear off a 2.3L.

Cheers, Bob.
