I would just go with the PERTRONIX kits. It replaces the points and you don't even have to remove the distributer. I have been running it for years in my GTO with out any trouble. And the price is right. The kit si available from several vendors(Summit Racing is when i got mine).

It's got a SB chevy motor in it and it doesn't have H.E.I.? Thats rare to see nowadays. It should accept The new dist with no problems. Unless the firewall needs to be reworked some more to make room for it.

I couldn't use the HEI without carving up the firewall, so I'm running an MSD small-bodied billet electronic distributor. And, yes, the Petronix would have been lots cheaper.

So theres a kit that converts a points dist. to an HEI? Am I understanding this right? That would be sweet if I didnt have to take the old one off. I hate trying to line everything up when it goes back in. I m not the sharpest of mechanical hobbiests but I think Id be alright if I didnt have to remove it.

Removing and reinstalling a distributor is not hard to do. You just have to keep things straight on the motor and in your brain and it would be a easy job. You do it a couple of times and it becomes second nature to you. So do some homework and see what direction is best for you whether you swap for a H.E.I. and rework the firewall or going with a Petronix on the original dist. It would be best to work the petronixs conversion on a bench, If you drop a screw or something into the dist body it could be a pain to get it out. Or drop a small part i the engine compartment and never be able to find it.

OK i put it a SB and didn't have to massage the firewall at all i got about a 1/2" clearance between firewall and the distributor maybe my motor mounts are set ahead just a lil ,and junked factory module and running the MSD man made lighting module good up to 9000rpm before spark fade.

It is very easy to pull out a distributor, and reinstall. Take the distributor cap off, and see which way the rotor is pointed. Make a mark on your manifold, and pull it out. Then just line the rotor up to your mark, when you reinstall. Very easy, you can do it, have faith. Just make sure no one tries to start the car while it is out. I put a Crane electronic system in my point distributor, very easy, we'll help, we are all friends here.

HEI should fit fine. I used to run one in mine. thats a decent distrib for medium perf applications. High perf apps you should use an MSD billet with a blaster coil and a 6aL or 7 box. just my .02
