Do you still have to pass a smog check in Ok.? I was just curious.

If I didn't have to get checked out here in Ca. I would have Webers on both my trucks. I hate these stock carbs.

People here that have them seem to like them. I had one on my wifes 78 Celica years ago and just bolted it on and went. It came with an adapter kit. It ran great.

Had a Weber on the first Luv I owned in 85... think I bolted it on, hooked it up, clamped off a couple vac lines and off I went.

I have a weber that fits directly on my luvs intake and has an adapter that uses the stock air cleaner, It was sold as a smog legal carb in california. 8)
I have a new 38 dgas i'll be swaping in sooner or later as soon as i get the adapter, linkage, and filter.

If you can wait a few months, I wouldnt mind getting rid of it.

The secret to getting a weber cheap is to bid on Ebay for as many decent-looking used ones you can untill you get one. You can usually find them on there with the air cleaner assembly and all the accessories you will need with them. Then once you get one, if it doesn't work well, get a complete rebuild kit off of ebay cheap and just rebuild it. They are pretty simple and easily rebuilt in a small amount of time, requiring a mimimum of tools and some pretty basic skills.

The model best for a stock 1.8 is the 32/36, preferrably with the manual choke, but the one-wire-hook-up electric choke model is OK too. You will need an adapter plate to get either to bolt on to your intake, but if yours doesn't come with the one you need, they still can be purchased from almost any auto parts store or ordered online pretty cheap. Also, if you get the manual choke model, you can pick up a 6-ft generic choke cable at any parts store cheap too.

I personlly like the manual choke model because it's simpler to rebuild and trouble-free. Just pull out the choke to start your truck when it's cold, and push it in a little at a time untill it's up to normal operating temperature. Once your engine is warm, you don't have to fuss with it at all, and your fuel/air mixture can be set more accurately, which improves performance and mileage even a little bit more.

The worst thing you might run into during the whole conversion is having to do a little bit of fabricating on your throttle linkage, but usually by using some stuff off of your old carb and a drilll and a hacksaw, it's pretty simple and basic stuff.

I recently gave Ben a ton of .pdf's with instruction on how to rebuild them, their complete parts list and description, and their proper adjustment, for probably every weber ever made. He has graciously added them here, and now you can download it all from the Info Section on this site.

(While you are there, take a look at the other tech stuff that Ben has put there thanks to the donations and hours of hard work from your other fellow members tracking it all down and sending it in. There is a huge amount of very usefull stuff there, which is why we all worship Ben and this site...lol)

All in all, once you have your weber installed and working properly, you will gain a huge improvement in gas mileage, performance, and despite what you may have heard - they are a damn fine carb, last practically forever, and are as simple a carb to maintain and adjust as you will ever find.

Happy hunting!

What he said :D

I got a my Weber off a guy on this site for $100+ shipping, all I had to do was clean in it up a little and fab up an adapter plate(I'm cheap and I like fabing stuff  ) I didn't have to do much with my throttle linkage as I had already modified it. The one thing I did do was swap throttle cable cams between the Weber and my Hicrappy. As far as the choke, the Weber had the electric choke on it which was pretty easy to wire up to the stock choke wiring on my truck (80 4x4) As to increased power..WOW, my seat-of-the-pants dyno says I've got an extra 10+hp...and I'm accually able to hold 65mph going up most hills.....and to top it all off my mpg increased by about 2mpg!!! Over all I think it's one of the best, if not the best upgrade I've gotten for my Luv. but now I want a cam, header, and electronic ignition to see what this will really do

Yeah the mileage and performance is a great improvement, When i moved from ventura county back up here to ukiah i made it with only one tank of gas (14gal.I think) also with 15x8 ralleys with 275 70's in the rear and 225 60's in front and the long bed packed full of heavy boxes, had a complete rebuid about 2k miles b4 that and new g200 head around 500 miles prior. The trip was somewheres around 600 miles, and i wasnt going easy on it either i had just gotten out of the navy and i was goin the f*@$! home. took the grapevine pretty well too.

No smog checks here, in fact a few years ago they did away with vehicle inspections, and then tacked 5 buck's to your tag price.

A Weber 32/36 or 38/38 is a bolt on that is much better than the stock carbs. Expect a used one to run about $100 and new ones around $250 or so.

I work on early Datsun cars and trucks which used the same Hitachi carbs as the Luv, I do have about 4 good used Hitachi carbs. But the Weber bolts on with an adaptor and your done. Plus the chrome air cleaner housing and reuseable filter is nice.
