The engine that was in my blue 78 when I got it, that I thought was the original, the one with the wrist pin knock, is actually a G200!!!

I started taking crap off of it tonight to get it ready for the rebuild shop and noticed the block says G200.

I never even looked before because I was so certain that it was the original engine. :wink: 8)

My son was pretty happy to discover this and then got a flash light to check the 2 spare blocks I have. They are G180's though. :cry:

the same thing happened to me too. You might want to check the head also. it is stamped up front if it is a G200 just like the block. if I remember correctly it is marked up by the heater bypass house connects to the head.

I have read on the forum if you put the g180 head on the g200 block it will increase the compression and the house power. only other thing you might have to get a high torque starter to overcome the compression

I currently am using a Weber DGAV downdraft carb. and a high end Crane cam, (light race). I have this connected up to a 5 speed trans. and depending on what gears you want to run, the automatic trans. version of these trucks comes stock with 4:10 gears which I am currently running. The stock gears are 4:56 on the manual trans. I think the 79 and 80's use 4:10 on everything. This is no BS. I just completed this and currently drive the truck and it hauls ASS, not V-8 hauls ass, but getting close to it. In addition I built a torque plate and used it when I bored the cylinders I estimate I'm running 10 to 1 compression. (Premium gas only, boys!) Higher if you can get it!!! The truck does well over 100 MPH and accelerates pretty fast if you can keep the rear weels from spinning-haha! I have lots of fun with this!!! Se ya!

You could just order the Impulse pistons instead of the Trooper/pup ones when your getting the kit to rebuild the motor. That will bump the compression. Pistons are the difference.


If your rebuilding that G200Z you probably should have a read up. The oiling system for the bottom end was set up differently than the G180Z. Both motors share the same stroke crank and the same deck height. The G200Z was prone to spinning bigend bearings and sufferend some timing chain issues.
With a mix of G200Z and G180Z bits you can build a killer motor. If you put those bits in a bored out G161Z block with 86mm off the shelf forged pistons and turbo and EFI youve got a potential 9 sec engine.

Darren is this guys name and his claim to fame is a 9.82@138.6mph at Calder 18/11/05 & 9.82@139.1 at Heathcote 4/12/05. Thats 1/4 mile in a factory G161Z (1.6L) blocked Gemini (I-mark).

He sells engines etc and he might impart you some wisdom if you ask. Thats if and when he gets time, hes a busy boy.

Hey Bob...can you put a G180 crankshaft and connecting rods in a G200 block and still use the G200 pistons?

Since using a G180 head on a G180 block boosts the compression so much, then why can't someone just use the G180 crank and rods together with the G200 pistons and a G180 head?

Since the G180 connecting rods are shorter I believe.....wouldn't that drop the compression ration caused when you bolt on the G180 head enough so that you wouldn't have to run premium fuel or need a high torque starter?

Has anyone ever checked before to see if the G180 rods will fit and connect to G200 pistons?

If they do...it would seem to be a cheap and easy fix.

G180Z and G200Z share the same stroke. The G180 is smaller because of the bore. You would have to bore a G180 a fair way to get G200 pistons to fit.

You can use G180Z stuff in a G200Z block, the G200Z had different oiling and timing chain setup so you have to be sure and do your research.

Thats been done here heaps. More common is the G161Z head onto the G200Z.

The G180Z head will up the compression but has smaller valves.

I've got a truck that has a G180 head on a G200 block. The truck has other issues though so it hasn't spent any time on the road to tell you how it runs. It seems ok, but it is really hard to tell if it has detonation issues just running it around the farm.

Bob: Too bad we don't see G161Z motors over here. I know if I ever visit your part of the world I'll probably have a shipping container worth of stuff I want to bring home with me. :P

Since the oil pan on a 4x4 is differnt, I take it that will bolt onto the bottom of the G200 Block?

I contacted Darren at Gem Racing and he told me what I would need to run the power that I want. He also said that he doesnt sell the engine kits and DIY. So what I am wondering is, does anyone know where I would be able to get the manifolds for the stock block motor. The turbo itself,the piping and plumbing would all be custom. I dont know if I just need to scrounge stock parts and make them work or if I have to get total one-off pieces made. Anyone who could help would be greatly appreciated..........

I talked with my eng. builder today. All is well, he said he had trouble finding new pistons for the G 200. He had to hunt around for them, but he got them today.

As far as the manifold goes you will only need the inlet by the sounds of it. One off a 2.6L EFI motor would be the go. A custom plenum chamber would be advised for ease of intercooling. The 2.6L intake runners are bigger than the G200 ports.
If you wanted an exhaust manifold a turbo impulse will work but the flange the turbo bolts to isnt very performance friendly. Its an oddball flange suited to IHI turbos, mainly some of the RHB5 and RHF5 series. Its basically a log type manifold too.

Would be a bit hard to build a motor the way Darren does it as i dont like your chances of getting a G161Z block. You might have to lash out on a set of custom forged pistons to suit the motor you build. Part of the reason Darren did it that way is because the RB30ET nissan pistons are 86mm and common "off the shelf" forgies. At 86mm in a bored G161Z they work well. One off forged pistons command a premium price here as theres not many manufacturers, stateside theres a few so i think you would have better luck.

As far as your EFI goes thats up to you which tuneable system you wish to use.

Say I go with a G200 Block, Do I have to go with a differnt Exhaust and Intake manifolds? I saw that link listed about, but didn't see all the details.
I don' t want to run a turbo, but I figure a G200 would be a good bost, as long as theres not a lot of modifications needed.

There are no mods needed from a G180 to a G200. I thought mine was a G180 untill I had it out and was working on it, and noticed the block and head said G200 on them.
