Well guys, after 75 1/8th mile passes on the new motor i broke today in the 10 grand races in Bowling Green today. I dont know what it is yet but i am pretty sure it is what happened last time...... The key that connnects harmonic balancer sheared off again. I cant say that i am happy about it in the least bit. I am calling my engine builder first thing tommorrow to "talk." he races too and i must say that if he was there this weekend......i wouldnt have been a nice person..... grhhh. Sorry i just need to vent but when my 75 pass old alcohol 406 goes this quick......Its hard to be nice about it

Been there done that some of my buddies run IMCA modifides. For a while it was lucky to make the weekend without blowing a motor. Are you using the parts from previous blown motors to build the new motor. My opinion only spare motors should be built using anything that was in a motor that was blown up. No matter how good a machine shop or builder you have blown parts are blown parts. When I build a good motor ALL parts are new to much of an investment not to be, no sleeved blocks resized rods, ground cranks, used cams or valve train. ALL NEW

Just my .02

Hate to hear it. I saw a balancer roll across the track Fri. night. The threads pulled out of the end of the crank.

When i had this motor built, the only "used" parts were the block and heads. The heads were ported slightly and cleaned up. Everything else was new to the motor. I just talked to the builder and i will take it to him later this week to figure out if it is really the harmonic balancer again. The motor was a fairly conservative built one too.....!3:1 with world iron heads and a roller cam. Launching at 4000 rpm on the trans brake and shifting at 6700 and going through the 1/8 at 6600-6800 or so is soft on a small block. The motor went when i lifted and the RPM's dropped WAY off from where they normally are when im slowing down in 2nd gear. Then it died.....

Wonder if that Balancer was balanced correctly with the rotating assembly.
Is it a GM balancer or...?

Ive known guys to pin and re-balance balancers that are stock.
Check/inspect the out ring for prior or , now-post, spin movement.
If it was a GM balancer, 1 offering might be that the outer band may have moved on you during the rpm changes....just a thought.
I paint a line on the back of every stock balancer I use before installation to be able to keep an eye on that...

No, its an aftermarket SFI approved balancer. I forget the brand but the possibility of it being mounted incorrectly is always an option. I doubt it, but thanks for the ideas, i will let you all know what i find out later this week when we get to it.

Well, i have an answer to my engine problems.....its not a blancer and i didnt hurt anything but apparently the ignition rotor came apart. They ordered a new one and were able to piece the old one back together to get the truck to run. So i guess i dodged a HUGE bullet on that one.

Was the rotor from MSD? I had one do that is the reason why I'm asking.
