I have an '80 Luv 4x4. It's basically stock. I love the simplicity of the 1.8 and I know it's fairly cheap to make some power out of it, but I am curious if its fairly easy to bolt in the Chevy 2.8 V6 used in the Trooper to this truck. Would it bolt up to my stock 4spd in my truck or does the Trooper use a different bell housing since it's a 5spd, or did they use 4spds for the V6 Troopers too? I know I'd have to probably make some custom motor mounts, but I've always wondered how much work a V6 swap like this would be. Anyone have any info on this swap? Thanks.

Not Really Sure As Far As Everything Else But You Would Have To Use A 2.8 Bell Housing Because Of The Location Of The Starter.

The V6 bellhousing pattern is not the same as the LUV or the 4 Cylinder motors found in Troopers. To swap one in you would need motor and trans to match. You'd want the 5spd anyway though as it would help highway mileage a lot.

You'd need motor mounts, drivelines, pretty much all the same stuff you'd need for any swap. The V6 Trooper was made to fit the motor, so there isn't any real advantage to it over any other swap.

I would suggest a 2L (turbo or non turbo) or 2.3L with efi out of an impulse. Or a 2.3L carby out of a trooper/pup or a 2.6L efi out of the later models.

They will bolt up to the box and basically are a bolt in fit.

You can retro fit the 2.6L motor with a 2.3L carby and inlet manifold/fuel pump (be sure and get the pushrod) and distributor. It pays to give the carby manifold a bit of a port as the 2.6L had bigger ports. You could use a weber carby too.

If you can get a motor with a bit more urge than you have got you could gear it up with bigger tyres for a bit more economy.

Cheers, Bob.
