Does anyone have any knowledge on the California Smog Laws? I have a 79' Chevy luv and My buddy has an 85 Mustang. He offered me the 302 with a performance Tranny, and a posi Trac rear end. I need to know wiether or not I can swap the engine and still get it smogged.

cali use to have a 30 year rolling emmisions exemption but they stopped it last year at 75 and older so you have to have all stock for the smog. it doesnt even matter if it will pass with flying colors with the 302 it wont pass the visual part. the only way i know is if you find one of those rare smog guys that will make the tester accidentally fall out of the tail pipe for a few extra dollers and if ya find one let me know lol cause i have smog issues with my 76, they said it didnt have to be smogged anymore when i bought it in 04 and last year they said it now needed to be so ya...anyway hope this helps

Why would you choose a Ford Windsor for a LUV?

I had done the steps necessary for smog...your truck is an 79?
Well, you will need all of the correct smog pieces to pass an inspection.
You will need the EFE and proper exhaust manifolds, Temp sensor switch in the intake, EGR and manifold, correct carb, heat riser off of the exhaust manifold, smog tubes, correct working air cleaner, and more...
Decide for sure you want to smog it.
I can assist in some of it if you choose to go that path...

Well, the reason I want to put that engine in it is because I have the small 1.8 ltr 4 banger in my luv and the carb is broken. My buddy has this mustang with all those parts, but the wiring harness is bad so he told me I can get the whole car for 500. Thats cheaper than buying a huge engine for my LUV and its will haul ass. Everything that is needed for smog on the mustang is there, I just need to transfer it to the LUV right? The mustang it complete.

Ask a smog referee about it first. They are the people that will know because they will ok it or not when it's done.

A friend of mine drops 350s in Toyota 4X4s and gets them passed...

You cannot drop an engine that is older than your car and pass...
The engine you put in must be able to pass the emissions requirements of the car it came out of...
You will have to go to a referee station to get passed.

Here's the BAR's page on stuff for swaps...

http://www.smogcheck.ca.gov/StdPage.asp ... n_1994.htm

Do you know the status of your friends last smog test?

you will have to retain all of the smog equipment present on an HO 5.0 motor and put it on your LUV.... all the way down to the H-Pipe with 4 cats on it. go to the Referee and have them certify the swap and they will put a foil tag in the door jamb that says the state of CA says OK to the V8.

85 motor in 79 model truck is ok but not vice versa
I see a lot of stuff on the BAR list that they do not enforce but that doesnt mean they will overlook it for every case so use that list as a guide and be prepared for worst case.

Your truck is a 79, so all you will need is to pass what a 79 Ford Windsor had that year...
Do note though.....
You will need to clarify what vehicle in 1979 that that Windsor came from, and the referees will look up what a Mustang with a 5.0-Windsor came with!
Claim it from a 1/2 ton truck and you will see that less emissions may have been installed by Ford , its possible...
I would seriously research what vehicle you wish to claim it to come from!!!!
It will make ALL the difference in the world in passing the inspection AND the test itsself!
