Post subject: Chevy SB side mounters?
PostPosted: Tue Feb 11, 2003 7:13 pm
I Know enough about motors to build one that hauls balls, but I lack the knowledge the mounts  . I was under the impression that all SB motors mounted the same, but according to doccuments I've read it says that for the hooker mounts I need a side mount motor. So, I'm assuming that all pre 199X, motors are side mount? I just didnt want to end up spending a bunch of money on the wrong motor. I was thinking of putting a 327 or maybe a 377 in a Luv.

i have some what of an answer for you. early chevy v-8 didn`t have side mounts . the mounts were located on the front of the block. that would be those lower bolt boses you see between the timing cover and the side of the block just to the left and right of the balancer .the mounts went from there to a front crossmember they also had mounts on the bell housing. i think they used them from 1955 to about 1960. i could be wrong on that. i beleive the 265 some 283 and 327s were lacking the bolt boses on the side of the block for the side mounts. i don`t see to many of those blocks around anymore. later terry

The early small blocks that don't have side mounts are 1955-56-57. These were 265" and 283". Starting in 58 all engines have them. Every 327 is a side mount.

Be aware that pre 1970 small block heads don't have bolt holes in the ends for bolting on accessories like the alternator.

LowKat is correct all 58 and up are side mount. And all 327's are side mount.

Hey, I'm from Medford also. All 1958 and later small blocks are side mount. I have an 81 LUV I'm going to put a 350 in, and am looking for information. You going racing Mar 22? I'll be there with a 502 powered 80 Malibu wagon. Send me an e mail at scrapdragon@msn.com
