Can anyone tell me what this is/does (pictures below)? I'm in the process of wiring the SBC conversion. This was located in the engine bay passenger side fenderwell.

Those are the fuel pump relay and the resistor bypass relay. You can tie in to the system and keep them or remove them and rework the fuel pump wiring. As for the metal cover for them, i have no idea why that is. Early trucks had the relays mounted to the inner fenderwell.

Yes you are correct. Not sure about the cover either(mine had it to) but it made a great place to mount my 6AL ignition box.

I think the cover is there to make the relays more mysterious and challenging to diagnose. :P Actually, those relays are not terribly well sealed, so I think the cover is likely to help keep water off of them.

Thanks for the info. I'm going with a mechanical fuel pump anyways so I'll just leave those relays out. I also mounted the MSD 6AL there as well, perfect place for it. Hopefully within the next couple of weeks I'll be ready to crank this engine over; about 6 months in the making! I might have to have a neighborhood party that day, the neighbors have taken an interest in this project always asking how things are going. Thanks for all your help.

Perhaps they will be more understanding when you do a burnout in front of your house.

I will definitely come to Baytown to see you guys run. Last time I saw Donnies truck, he had just finished the frame for the backhalf, and the engine was on a stand with I think a 671 on top. Come on by, I could use some pointers and a little help. I keep the fridge well stocked with a variety of liquid refreshment.

You can wire in a Bosch 40 amp relay as a replacement. I've never seen a factory replacement relay. Getting one from a wrecking yard is a lot of hassle for a used unit.
XL800 has come up with a wiring diagram to use the Bosch type relays. If i can find it, i'll post it.
