does the new gen 1.8litre motor(76-82) swap in to the place of the old style motor

do they make smallblock conversion kits for the 75 luv

what is the differences in transmission beside the starter being on the drivers side

will a newer motor bolt to the old tranny

any help is very apreciated

I'll take a shot at this one for you....

1. 75 and 76 the frames are different at the motor mounts. the old style motor mounts differently to the frame
2. The later style motors are not a direct bolt in to the older trucks due to the frame mounts.
3. I believe the conversion kit from Hooker fits any of the first generation body style trucks (72-80). Most folks are just making up thier own mounts though.
4. I believe the differences in the tranny is limited to the starter mount location
5. I think the tranny will physically bolt up, but not be truly compatible due to the starter issue.

Don't take this as written in stone thoogh, I'm not the expert

Looks to me like Roadshow Bob has it all right. New motor plus old tranny is not a good mix. The starter location changes the bolt pattern quite a bit so it doesn't line up. You *might* be able to swap the rear plate between the motors and it just *might* line up, but I have not checked that out.

Swapping anything between the early style motor and the later style is going to require some work. Motor mounts don't line up, bolt patterns are different, exhaust and fuel lines are not the same, early motor had a mechanical fuel pump, etc etc etc.

Yes, they do make conversion kits to put a small block in your Luv. There is a complete "how to" section on this site. There are also a lot of V8 Luv owners here who can answer questions for you.

Basically..a lot of the early Luv's with the first generation 1.8 engine and 4 headlights are either long since scrapped or now running a v6 or v8...because it was easier to do that then convert those old style Luv's over to the newer style G180 engine and tranny.

Plus anyone that has owned one of those old Luv's with the old style 1.8 will tell you...it really wasn't their best effort...and it tended to leave the poor owner not ever wanting to trust or put much faith in another Isuzu engine/drivetrain much.

They were pretty gutless, high maintenance, ran crappy, and top speed on the freeway was about 60 mph down a seriously steep hill with a real strong tail wind...lol

I've owned a couple for a while that were in real good shape...but I eventually sold them when the stock engine started getting tired...to someone that wanted to build a hot rod v6 or v8 conversion truck.

I had 74 Luv with a 350/powerglide in 1978. The reason is because of the aluminum head and the cast iron block. In Houston you run air conditioning if you don't want to be soaking wet when you get to your destination. I bought a 75 in 1976, and took it back to the dealer three times because of a blown head gasket. After the dealer would no longer honor the wanantee, (before the lemon law) they let me trade for a 76 full size truck. Everyone with a Luv, I talked to had the same problem. During that time the full size truck values skyrocketed, and my truck was worth $2000.00 more than I paid for it. Long story short, 74 Luv with a 350/powerglide. I had so much fun with that truck, it should have been against the law. Some of the things I did with it were. I had not read The World According to Garp.
