Since no matter what vehicle you get one out of, it seems like you're going to have to narrow it anyway, what vehicle seems to be the best source for a 9 inch rear end? Do any come stock with disc brakes?

RATNLUV, I believe you told me that the width to get it narrowed is 41 inches. Is that pretty close to stock?

Thanks

I pulled mine out of a Lincoln Town car that had rear disc brakes. Only problem was that the calipers hit my rims and I ended up buying a whole disc brake kit from Currie anyway. So, the stock discs were kinda a waste of money for me.

So if you get one from a Lincoln, you may have trouble running a wide 15" rim in back.

What year did you get your's from? Or does it matter?

I had a Firebird once (I FU*KN miss that car) it had rear discs and that thing stopped on a freakin dime. Anyway I had a blowout and threw on a makeshift spare from a junkyard, and sure enough, it rubbed the hell out of it. Those were some deep ass rims!

i was told the rear end out of a mercury versalies , i think i spelled that right, is real close to the stock luv rear. it comes with disk brakes i just found that one out this weekend. the guy said he thinks his was 55" wide from wheel mount to wheel mount.i guess its a hard car to find though. hey drummer don`t forget rat n luv is tubbed his rear will be narrower unless your planning to tub.later terry

From what i've figured out, the bigger the vehicle, the better the 3rd member. The larger cars had 3rd members that were 31 splined axles. The smaller cars(mavericks, granadas, Mustangs with 6 cyl engines) primarily ran with 28 spline axles. Aim for the 31 spline set up. You'll have more room to mod the engine before you have to worry about the axle going bad.

Mine is 39" outside wheel flange to flange. Ask the guy running the junk yard to make you a good deal on whatever he thinks he will never sell. I got mine when I junked a 70 ford van.
The best thing to do is buy your wheels and tires and put them under the truck to get the measurement for you rearend.

I will be getting my 3rd member and housing back from the builder this week. When i get it home i'll measure the width from bearing flange to bearing flange. And from axle flange to axle flange. I'll post the measurements. This setup im running P265/60R-14 tires. 8" wide rims with 0 rim offset. The truck has a stock look to it if thats what your going with.

I do believe a 68-72 Bronco rearend is as close as you will get to the stock Luv width. It's 51" wide, backing plate to backing plate. About 3" wider thn the Luv.

Excellent find Chris..Thanks! I've copied it to my computer for future reference. Welcome to the site.
I'd like to get some feedback on what this axle guy told me: He said that i had Chrysler axle bearing housings in my Ford 9" differential. I've never heard of such a thing. When i replaced the bearings for my axle shafts, I got stock replacements and they fit correctly. The backing plates fit correctly to the bearing housings. Even the axle seals fit correctly to the housings. I think he's feeding me a line of crap. He went on about how he had to fab some pucks to align the axle(stall tactic?). Can anyone shed some light on this or does this guy think im a mushroom?

I hear ya! I was amazed the first time i drove my truck with a TH 350 and the stock rear end. 0 to 50 was very, very cool but it's hell on the Hwy with traffic ready to run over you and the engine temp showing a nuclear meltdown reading. Low gear was almost non-exsistent and dont even dare to drop the trans manually into 2nd while you're still rolling. From a dead stop i could drive casually and at about 80' it would shift into 3rd already. It was fun but not practical. I'm running with 2.75 gears and it works great for me. 2500 RPM @ 70 MPH. Initially i thought that this ratio would be too tall but it has worked out very much to my satisfaction. There's a link to a couple of gear ratio calculators in the information section of this site. You might want to use them to get an idea of what ratio you want or to see what you will get with the ratio you've already decided on.
