Almost Cat.

At the present time I'm running a de-smogged Impulse 1.9 g200 engine with a slightly bigger than stock cam from delta, a pacesetter header, a weber 38/38 carb with an adapter plate, an 82 luv/imark g180 electronic distributor and ignition module with an accel high performance coil, a cleaned up stock g180 intake with all of the smog and egr stuff removed/blocked off, an open hood scoop ducted towards the carb's weiand air cleaner, an 87 pup radiator, and all new 2 1/2 inch exhaust pipe with a cherry bomb glasspack and a cheapo muffler and a resonator tip.

I have a spare junk g180 head that I'm getting ready to send to a local machine shop to have it re-done with bigger G200 valves to add to the engine, but I'm kinda busy right now trying to get some work on the truck's interior and exterior done.

With it all sitting in a '78 stepside with a bigger clutch disk, pressure plate and flywheel from an Impulse - plus a 5 speed and rear-end out of an 87 Pup - that's about all I can think of to do to it except maybe add an offy intake if and when one is available.

As it sits now, it prefers to run on premium gas and hauls butt pretty good for a little 4-banger truck that is hand-built from a big pile of old junk parts plus other stuff I got from members here and on e-bay...lol.

thanks... i have my sons G200 here and may use it to do something like you... he said he will wait to get a truck until he gets back our out in 2 years,so he doesn't need it right now... and i have the 5speed with shorten drive shaft ready to go.. amd i have the hot cam thats in mine and the 2 sets of side draft carbs and intakes (see which performs best) the dellorto or solex

Sounds like a good plan.

The reason I'm getting the g180 head re-done is because putting the bigger g200 valves in it will help my performance and work better with the bigger 38/38 weber carb I'm using, and adding the re-done g180 head to my 1.9 g200 will boost up my compression ratio a bit more.

That should cheer up the local cops and my neighbors a bunch. :D

how can you tell a g180 head from a g200… I was taking the motor apart today the head looks like new and was going to see the size difference in the valves but it has the same valve as I have in my g180 so I am wondering if the g200 I am checking to make sure is ok and do a mild rebuild may already have the g180 head on it... i see by the block its a 82 g200 built in march of 82

the g200 head will have "G200" on the front of it. the g180 head will have an isuzu symbol on the front.

well with my experience with the 180 block and the 200 head, they make a good putt putt motor. the 3 engines ive had like that have always been pretty much dogs. the 180 with a 180 head is alot more peppier than the 180/200 im my opinion.

but for that cheap, i wouldnt turn it down.

Farmer..were you using a stock cam, stock carb, stock exhaust, stock intake w/all of the smog stuff intact, and a stock coil w/a points distributor...or did you have it de-smogged w/all of the aftermarket stuff on it? And how hard were they to crank over?

Sorry for all of the questions...but I'm just wondering if de-smogging it, adding a header, a weber 38/38 carb, a bigger cam, a higher output coil, and an electronic distributor/ignition module makes it all work out better for anyone using a hybrid G180/G200 engine.

The Impulse 1.9 G200Z engine I'm using already comes stock as a high compression motor with taller flat top pistons and a bit stiffer valve springs, and if I add the G180 head to it, it's going to boost the compression up a bit more, and hopefully I'll end up with a good running high-performance 4-banger with plenty of torque.

I purposely didn't get a much beefier than stock cam from delta for it because I didn't want to have to worry about valve-to-piston-top clearance if I bolt on a G180 head w/G200 valves installed in it.

(With a regular 2.0 block, it shouldn't be as much of a problem though, because it's pistons aren't as tall.)

I've checked on the Aussie site, on the Isuzu forum, with delta cams, with a good reliable local machine shop, and everyone else that I can think of, and I hope I'm not about to spend a few bucks fixing up a G180 head w/G200 valves just to turn out a very crappy running engine that my stock starter won't crank over.

As it is now with the stock Impulse 1.9 head still on it - it runs pretty darn strong already.

And frankly, I'm kinda getting tired of working on it...and my "honey-do" list ain't gettin' any shorter...lol

all the motors im talking about have been with a g180 bottom end and a g200 head. make the engine have alot lower compression than just a stock g180.

theres a few ways to get these engine to work well.

if your going n/a, go with a g200 block with a 180 head, or better yet a 161 head ported to no end, and with the biggest valves you can squeeze in it.

if your goin with boost, got with a g180 block bored to fit g200 pistons, with a 161 head thats been ported to hell, and the huge valves.

its either compression and a big cam, or dish pistons and lost of boost.

Impulse 1.9 G200 block, Impulse pressure plate/flywheel/clutch, G180 head, weber 38/38 carb, Pacesetter header, electronic distributor/ignition module, Delta re-ground cam, Accel or Pertronix high performance coil, 50 amp alternator, 5 speed tranny, newer Pup rear-end, Offenhauser intake (impossible to find), tuned exhaust, and a huge limit on your plastic or a fat wallet...lol

That will take you from 75 hp with a top speed of 60 mph to 150-175 hp with a top speed of over 100mph (speedo doesn't register higher - so I have no idea...lol)

But cheap or easy it aint. It can be done though if you look around a lot, talk to enough people here, cruise enough junkyards, and hang around on ebay a lot.

My hotrod '78 stepside took over 2 years to build and I'm not done yet - but I've enjoyed ever single minute.

My wife wasn't too crazy about the Luv at first, but eventually she came around. Now she is as obsessed as I am.

These little trucks grow on you - it's addicting.

so earlier on in this port it states taht you can install intake and exhause manifolds from the G series engine onto the 4xZ1 class engine, if this is so then that means that i can use the intake manifold off of a 2.6l isuzu engine for my LUV right? just wondering sorry to ruin your thread...

Thanks for this info.
I'm especially interested in your offer to describe the electronic ignition upgrade you mentioned. I've just completely rebuilt the engine & drive line in my '79 2WD, all stock except for no smog & a Weber, and would really like an electronic ignition. Tried Pertronix, but no luck.

If you could possibly list what is needed & how it's done, I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks!

find a later model p'up (i used an i-mark distributor) and is should have the internal module electronic ignition... then it is a simple wire job to get it working
