his is 2wd not 4x, I'm thinking in terms of drive ability on the street. Now if it was 4x I'd put a ARB or an Aussie locker in there (as soon as the Aussie locker is released that is..eta is around April or so)

The ARB would be right at home ina 2x4. He could have an open diff to drive around with, and when he was ready to "Race" he could push a buttom, and presto! He's got a spool!

That is exactly what I was thinking. Any time you want to go fast in a straight line you just punch the button for two legged operation.

update today!

i got a new rearend for the truck today. its another stock rearend with 456 gears. i got it from Rick on here. its out of his v8 truck. its got new brake shoes and cylinders in it. so now im good for the rearend.

i also got another g180 engine a week back. its got like 125k on it, but im got it for just the head. its in alot better shape than the one i had.

my buddy also cleaned out the garage. so im gonna be pullin the engine from the pup soon. then im gonna take the block, cranks, rods, pistons, and head to the machine shop. gonna have the bottom end balanced, the block hot tanked and the the deck surfaced. the head is going to get tanked, and surfaced also.

heres some pics of the new parts...

got some more parts. hand-me-downs kick ass!!

i got the slapper bars, and a set of front shocks from cody's (luvontherocks) luv. he doesnt need either of them anymore due to him ladder bar-ing, and coil-overing his luv.

so free parts are always good.

im also going to be pullin the engine today.

i though about starting it up for one last time today, but i didnt wanna swap all the parts from the luv back onto it.

anyways, heres a pic of the newly acquired parts...

Image

ill have pics of the engine pull later on.

got the engine out. seems it gets easier every time.

only took like 2 hours to do, but i was screwin around about 75% of the time.

anyways, all went well. no broken parts on the truck or the people pullin the motor.

i did take some of the engine apart.

its got slightly domed pistons in it. they also have "A"s and "B"s stamped into the tops of them.

the cylinders look abosolutly fabulous too!! on some of the cylinders you can still see some crosshatching.

i only took the head off, so i dont know about the rest of the engine. i have to get bolts for the engine stand tomorrow, and then i can tear it the rest of the way down.

things are lookin good for this engine!!

heres the pics...

Image

the exhaust i had on the pup. it did sound pretty good! lol

see the dome

Image

the head looks good too. im gonna see how much itll cost to put g200 valves in the g180 head.
Image

im gonna go to the machine shop tomorrow during my lunch and see how much this all is going to cost me.

ill get more pictures of the inside of the engine tomorrow.

the motors apart now.

everything checks out good.

there was some scoring on the rod bearings, but the way the oil had some metal in it, im not surprised. the mains looks great though!!

the cylinders also look great. you can still see stock crosshatching in some of them.

the pistons are good too. one had a tiny bit of scoring on one skirt, but it isnt anything to worry about.

the crank looks okay. the mains are good, but the rod journals are gonna need polished.

no horrible damage was found in the motor. its gonna need a new timing chain and guides, but thats a given on something like this.

anyways, here some pictures...

see the crosshatching...
Image

yup, it must be a g200...
Image

i also have some other news. i picked up a pacesetter header for the truck today. $50. its a fairly new header too. its got the 3/8in laser cut flange, 1 1/2in primaries with a 2 1/2in collector. ill get a picture of it tomorrow after work.

since i have the motor apart now, i got a deal on the main part of the machine work, so i need to get all the stuff to the guys shop to get it done.

i cant wait to get this thing back on the road.

Hey, I want you to know that I'm watching this thread, and very interested. I think your photos are super, and the presentation is excellent. I expect you're taking lots of photos, and then picking and choosing the ones you want to post. I ended up with over 2000 photos of my LUV, but then that's counting all the way back to when I first started with my LUV.

My machine shop charged me almost $600 for the work on the block, the crank, and the rods. The cylinder head was done earlier, and cost almost $200. I also had the top cover, front cover, and oil pan cleaned by them. This resulted in a much nicer end result after painting.

Are you having the cylinders honed? How about a line bore? New pistons? There is bound to be a taper in the cylinders that you might want straightened out, so get it all done if you can. I also see a ridge. Let the machine shop tell you what you need.

Best of luck to ya Neil. Don't rush. If you're doing new rings, check the end gap before you install them. Don't forget to put the oil pickup tube in and have to remove the oil pan to put it in like I did! Good thing it was still on the stand!!! Remember to tension-up your timing chain before you tighten down the top cover for the final time!!!

yeah i like to take pictures. ive got quite a few of this project.

as for the machine shop costs, its going to be near nothing to have the work done since its going to be my roomates fathers shop doin it.

im going to have the block hottanked, magnufluxed, the deck surfaced, cylinders honed, line bored and new freeze plugs.

the head is going to be hottanked also, along with surfacing the mating surface. im going to see if i can put G200 valves in it too. then when i get it back, i might do some mild porting on the exhaust side to match the header.

the rotating assembly is going to be balanced, and the crank is going to be polished. the pistons look good to me, so im gonna used them again. that and i dont want to buy a new set of pistons for an 84 isuzu impulse. they cost about $350.

My pistons cost around $120 for a matched set. Then the chrome rings were $70. The shop put the pistons on the rods for me, which was a $30 cost. I chose to have brass freeze plugs, which added another $30.

You're fortunate to have a situation that provides you low-cost machine work. I hope it works well for you. My engine, "RumbleBee", is humming sweetly!! I don't think it could be any smoother or quieter!! I changed my break-in oil today, and replaced the filter. This was after more than 300 miles. Now I'll go another 100 miles and change it again. I expect it to last for many, many years. May your engine do as well, and don't you rush at all.

well i have some bad and some bad news. some of the bad is good though.

the good bad news is, im more than likely moving again.

the bad news is, i now wont have the money to get the pup goin as soon as i though i would.

as much as id like to get this truck back on the road, i have to put it off to the side for a better place to live. i like my truck alot, but i like having a nice roof over my head better.

as of now my roomates and i are still in the application stages, but i dont doubt that we start movin here in about 3-4 weeks.

i also have some other news. im not going to have the time or money to have the machine work done on the engine. the shop i was going to is planning on bein open for only a month longer, so this is why i was getting such a deal.

so im not sure whether i just do all the work myself, or take it to another shop and have it sit for 2 months before its even looked at.

im kinda leaning towards doin alot of the work myself, and not going so extreme with the engine (ie: big cam, high comp, lots of carb). im thinkin the engine is just going to be put back together, and just driven. the pup might even end up gettin bagged and a different geared rearend put in it.

i really have no idea whats going to happen, but ill keep you guys updated.

WELL...

i have come to a conclusion on whats going to happen with the pup.

its not going to be a high compression, cammed up nightmare like i planned.

the motor is still being rebuilt, but not like id planned on. im going to clean the block, hone the cylinders, clean up the deck, emory cloth the crank, and put it back together. im going to use the g200 head that came off of it again also.

then im going to run the stock intake with a weber, and ill use the header that i picked up. thats about the extremest im gonna go on the engine.

since im doin it this way, i can just start cleanin everything back up right now. i know this isnt what is considered 'right', but its really all i can do now.

ive also decided on another thing. some of you might know what im gonna do just by seeing this pic...

Image

yes, that is a york 210 air compressor. and yes, the pup is going to get bagged.

now the bags wont be until we get in the next house, but the truck will be up and running hopefully by this time next month.

mkay. i made some progress tonite.

the block, head, and timing cover have been degreased. the block is ready for paint almost. i need to get the gaskets from the timing cover off the block still. then it going to be painted a dark grey or somethin.

the head still needs a little SOS work done to it, but its done for the most part.

the timing cover need an SOS job real bad, but my buddy is gonna work on that while i polish the crank journals.

the block is also ready for the crank to be put back in. i need to hone it and rinse it off one last time, but thats it. im gonna set the crank in the block and go over the rod journals with some emory cloth. the crank isnt bad at all, so this will be fine.

the pistons are probably going to have to wait to go in till next week. im running low on money right now, and dont get paid till monday. that and i need to by a torque wrench, ring compressor, and find my feeler guage again.

so, things are still going okay.

ill get some pictures tomorrow.
