oh ok, thanks.

i will continue the search for the 86-87 diesel tranny, though im guessing these are pretty rare...

Yes, you'd probably have an easier time finding a good diesel bell housing and using the transmission from a gasser. There 2.3 4wd's are not common either, but they're more common that diesel 5-speeds. There's an '86 Trooper 2.3 at my local Pull-A-Part.

I don't understand the question. The '87 is the same as '86. The diesel bellhousing can come from any diesel 5-speed '81-'87, and even SOME 4-speeds as long as they have the six bolt bearing retainer in the bell housing.

Here's a photo of the 6-bolt bearing retainer in a diesel bell housing. However, you may not be able to see all six bolts if the clutch fork is still attached.
