What would it take to put a 22r in a luv? Would some kind of adapter work or would you have to get a toyota tranny? Also, I am thinking about putting my luv body on an 87 4runner. The 4runner has a motor that is new but won't smog and the price is only $700.

Sounds like some more great information, we didn't have enough luck getting thru the head gasket problem to break pistons, but we did destroy the bottom end on a couple of 78 Luvs! Twisted a a couple of rods if I rememer right.
I think your suggestions bear mert. It just seems like a really poor investment to me when there are so many alternatives.

Hello raidersadie, apparently we were sending messages at the same time on the same subject.
I don't know how much problem it would be to install a 22R into a Luv, my experiences have been with Buick V6s and sbc s. But it would be a good idea to swap both eng and trans into a Luv if possible, the stock Luv transmission isn't that strong or reliable while the Toy is..Good luck on the body swap, sounds great, please keep all of us posted on your results?

hopefully when mine is done i will be able to come on here and post up a fully detailed thread on boosting the g180... if not im going to have a nice fairly expensive lawn ornament.. we will see.

as for the 22r they are a similar size so it should just require new mounts (using the 22r 5 speed) and a bit of driveline modifications, etc. should be a lit easier then swapping a v6 or v8
honestly the only reason i am keeping the g180 to turbo instead of a chevy 350 or 4.3 v6 is that i have 2 of them sitting around and i want to keep decent mileage while the pedal is off the floor
if you want practical cheap power by all means yank out the 1.8 and throw in a v6, v8 or a more modern 4 cyl.

i agree, the best way to make power in a luv is to yank out the 1.8 and drop in a v6 or a v8.
but since i have 2 of the 1.8s and a lot of time on my hands i have been doing some research. the bottom end can handle 15psi or less... 15 max.. once you swap to forged pistons your looking at 17-20..
now you can buy copper head gaskets from an ozgemini member who works at a gasket shop and add about 5ft*lb to the head bolts to solve the blowing issue.
then a 2.6 trooper intake.. and go ahead and drop the valves from the same engine into the stock head with a bit of valve seat machining to add lot more flow.

eventually you will end up with a very boost friendly engine that most people have never seen before and thats why i am interested in it... it can be done cheaply with most of the parts being available nationwide in yards and its the opposite of what most luv owners do

One last piece of advice and this applies to all aluminum heads on cast iron blocks/ ALWAYS INSTALL NEW HEAD BOLTS WHEN YOU ARE REPLACING THE GASKET!!! This is a lesson I had to learn the hard way. The solid copper gasket for a blown Luv sounds like a great idea too, although as stated we tried that and it didn't work any better.
Good luck and keep us informed of your progress,

Are you still looking for a turbo setup for your luv? I have a spare 85 isuzu impulse intake and turbo setup if you want it.

Thought I'd throw in a little more info on Turboing some of the Toyota 20-22R engines, just to show how you can get into a very expensive spending circle. I've already stated we found these engines has a poor piston design, the top ring groove is very close to the dish in the piston, and sluffs off when the engine detonates? We installed forged pistons, but then the clutch wouldn't hold the increased power, slipped under boost, so we installed a HD clutch. This helped us get the power to the rear wheels BUT when the engine detonated, and it will, the clutch didn't damped the impulses like the stock spring loaded one did and the pinging knocked all the teeth off the main gear in the transmission!!!
Oh! One last word on transmissions, don't even think of turboing one with an auto transmission, the trans will go up in smoke under full throttle shifts!!! Lots of fun experimenting but really expensive too.
Good luck, dp

also on the tranny situation i would spring for the trooper 5 speed. i have heard the hydraulic clutch version is considerably stronger than ours or the cable clutch 5 speed, would be a good starting point in a turbo build. im lookin into one for my engine im boosting before i drop in into the luv, no reason in destroying a 4 speed

You guys must be doing something seriously wrong if you're having issues with g-series engines, maybe you're chasing a little too much compression if you were blowing head gaskets regularly. check out this link for a bit of an idea what these things are capable of: http://www.freewebs.com/gemracing/currentcarspecs.htm

lol i talk to darren pretty often  most of the reason i decided to boost mine was by looking at his engines and the power they put out.

to be honest here imho with having helped build both blow through and bypass turbo systems on my cousins sand rails your best bet is to have a fuel injected manifold fabed up...

Here's what i seen with carburated turbo setups
if you tune the carb to run best under full boost your going to run rich at idle and if vise versa.. yes running a 4 barrel can help but your either going to run wet or dry at one end or the other

plus imho running fuel injected is going to give you a bit better fuel efficiency/better power as well as a better control over your fuel map... for the same if not a little bit less cost...

once my cousin switched from fooling with blow by (shooting the boost straight through the carb) and bypass (mount the carb similar to a supercharged setup external of the boost pressure) and went to a fuel injected setup he messed with the tune very little between runs...

last i knew he was running a mega squirt fuel injection setup
http://www.megasquirt.info/

but thats my $0.02 worth of input... on the topic
