One other comment on using a HD relay to provide a steady high voltage to the HEI? It will probably save you the trouble and expense of replacing your Luv's stock ignition switch. If you check out a lot of Luvs you will undoubtedly find many, many of them have replacement after market ignition switches. This is again because the stock wiring and ignition switches are simply insufficient to carry the amount of current needed by the HEI. Using the stock switch may work for a while however using a larger supply wire through a HD relay will provide a huge improvement in power in the upper rpm range where the stock HEI's suffer anyway, that's why MSD and Accel sell so many HEI ignition modules and high performance coils. When you have the opportunity, check out the testing done on HEIs, the stock units put out about 50K to the spark plugs at an idle, however this output drops off rapidly above 4-4,500 rpms. You won't see many stock HEI units in race cars!
Again whatever works for you is what is important! This is but one of the many reasons that this is such a wonderful site, we can learn from not only our own experiences but from the experieces of others, and perhaps save us all a bunch of money (and time). I've been doing these swaps for longer than I care to count and because of people like Old Rob and many others I continue to learn each time I browse the site!
Thanks Ben, and all of the others who have devoted so much time and effort to starting and maintaining LUVTruck.com !!!

I ran the stock waring harness to the starter and the coil, no problems what so ever. Why re-invent the wheel??

The voltage demand for the Chevy V8 starter solenoid is greater than the LUV's. The Chevy swap increases the temp, expecially with smog legal engines. Due to this increase in heat the stock LUV wire, which is a smaller gauge than the stock Chevy will not be able to pass the required current. If you extend the wire for a neutral safety switch this aggravates the problem. I'm a believer in neutral safty switches! This is not a problem on all conversions, just some and this is one fix for a no start when hot condition. This is the same fix that GM used on it's trucks and cars, when they had a hot, no start problem.

I also used the stock harness to the starter and NEVER had any problems .

I had a HEI distributor and short waterpump in mine and didn't cut the firewall . I built my mounts from scratch and used block huggers . Just take your time and think things out .

i as well used the stock harness,,,,9 years later still no problems.....

I have my ignition wired to a switch and a relay. 20amp Bosch relay. I could not find a 30 amp at the time. Parts Express has 30 and 40 amp relays.
http://www.parts-express.com/wizards/searchResults.cfm?FTR=Relay&search_type=main&WebPage_ID=3&searchFilter=Relay&x=0&y=0
You should be able to run the relays off the ignition switch. I have red you need 12 ga wire for the distributor. I am not sure how the Luv switch works but the HEI needs 12volts during cranking and running to work.

Thanks PapaG! Appreciate you input on the relays, and you are right when you state that HEI ignitions systems require a constant 12 V for starting and running. And a 12 guage wire supply wire is needed, just look at any stock GM engine using one of the distributors
When I do one of these swaps I always install HD relays for the starting and for the ignition, just saves a lot trouble later on. I've read the other comments about not having to use these but it has alway's been the case with me.
As stated earlier in this section, the HEI is a good "medium duty" ignition, easy to install and maintain. But if you put one on a test machine you will quickly see it's limitations, esp at high rpms.

being 17 i can use all the advice possible

look up hooker headers they have a kit for v8 swaps u can use a h.e.i distributer but you have to beat the wall back a little. i did and it fit just fine u may need to tune the wall as u fit it use shorty headers and take your radiator in to your radiator shop and have them 4 core it .if there any good they can do it .

You'll be money ahead and less trouble buying a 19 x 22" alum radiator and installing that. The 4 row stock is marginal at best. Goto www.powerbyace.com and look at the instructions for a V8 LUV in the technical section.
Don't cut the upper radiator core support panel!
