 Post subject: Bigger than 350
PostPosted: Mon Jan 19, 2004 1:05 am
I see a lot of instruction on how to do a 350 v8 swap but not much of anything bigger. I'd like to find an older bigger engine to build up and mount in my 72 luv. Anybody know what I could pull a 500+ cube engine from that could mount in a luv? Also, anybody done it and know of good ways to mount such a large engine? Also, what about support...i imagine dropping an engine of this size is going to effect what kind of driveline, suspension, rear end all of this. All hints tips suggestions ideas welcome! Thx in advance!

I think a 500 inch caddy would fit. I think your biggest fight would probably be headers or manifolds.

Don't remember. I think it was in the mid 70's before the economy rush.

Keith Black or Merlin I think. Both make huge engines. I have heard a 900+ cubic inch from Keith Black sometime in the future.

That is the rumor I heard a while back. Not sure how true it is, but it is possible.

Not sure what crank you could get that is larger than a 400 small block to stroke it with, but there isn't much meat on the sides of the cylinders to bore it out. I am leery of the 400 small block. I built a 383 and it held up, but the only 400 part I used was the crank. I have heard of bigger than 400 being a smallblock still, but not sure how it was done.

You can make a 454 small block. I think you have to use one of the mowtown blocks though. Luvsadrag would be the one that knows about that.

It's not true that I like putting big blocks in places they don't belong. Because they belong in everything  . I did put a small block in a old jeep once.(I was out of big blocks at the time)

The main thing you need to do is get rid of the torsion bars if you are going bigger than a small block. It might be possible but it clears up a bunch of room for exhaust.

Their are several articles on streching the smallblock to 454 c.i. but I haven't really read up on it.

I am looking on all the info I can find on 496 at the moment. The crank is junk in the 454 so if I am going to have to buy one it will be a strocker  .

Ok heres what i know about the 454 sbc. They take a sbc and cut it in half, and re sleeve it. They must make it bigger or wider or something. This is what my buddy told me when i asked him today. He seen it in a magazine a year or two ago. I'm gonna try and find more info on it, it was pretty cool.

The engine your friend is talking about was a V-16. They put 2 small blocks together.I had the magazine but don't know where it is. The 454 small block is a aftermarket block.

about the 496 ratnluv ws talking about, i know a guy who has a convertible ss chevelle, (he is a doctor, he also has a wagon ss chevelle) anyway, he knows a guy that works in a dealership who had a guy that kwpt having trouble with his 496 in his pickup. so finally the dealership decided to swap engines and trannies. technicly you are supposed to destroy these things in circumstances like this, but he couldnt find it in his heart to dispose of it. so here he sits with a new 496 bigbock, and he cant sell it, so he told my doctor friend, he could donate it to a good projest, aka, his ss chevelle convertible. he still hasnt decided if he want to do it yet because he says he will have to put on like a six inch cowl hood to do it. how cool would that thing be
