82 luv 4x4 diesel, is it possible to swap the front differential with a rear differential or do I have to find a front differential to swap with?(given there the same ratio)

No. Rear is a 10-bolt, front is a 8-bolt, different size R&P & carrier, different shape & size housing, front doesn't have a thrust block.
All pickups gas or diesel '79-'87 have the same 8/10 diffies w/4.10 ratio

Perhaps all 4 X 4s had 4:10 gears, but some of the diesel powered 2 WD like mine had 3:42 ratios. Surprising enough it is holding up very well behind a sbc with a 700R4 trans, makes for a great freeway driver, 2100 at 70 mph. Gets good mileage too.

Well, what would you suggest? My 4 speed with a 4:10 rear end runs at about 50. Gettin tired of pissin people off on the freeway.

Since your only available 4x4 differential gears are 4.10 (or worse 4.56) your only option is a 5sp tranny, .855 OD 5th would give you the equivilent of 3.51 gearing.

OK thanks, I was hoping for another answer because I was told that I had to count the bolts on the new tranny to find out if it will work. It's a daily driver and can't afford to have it up on blocks to long.

If so what years?

Your only bolt-up option is the 5-speed from an '86 or '87 4wd P'up. It will require relocating the transmission mount, if I recall correctly. And if your transmission comes from a gas P'up, you will need to replace the bell housing with a diesel one from either a 5-speed diesel transmission, or from a 4-speed that happens to have six bolts in the input bearing cover. The one with four bolts won't work on the 5-speed.

I think you will need the 88 up 5 spd as they are a bigger stronger and have the removable bell housing.

The '88 was a 2.6, and it used the MUA-5 transmission. It is indeed bigger, and stronger...but it won't fit the diesel bell housing.

There's a 4wd 5-speed diesel transmission for sale on IsuzuPup.com (you must be a member to see the "For Sale" section). He wants $300, but who knows...he might take less. He said:
Quote:
It is a 5 speed- has L-5 stamped on side.
You can arrange freight shipping or pick it up near salt lake city.
I've shipped a 5-speed for about $75 and an auto for about $90 via FedEx Ground, but both were in a closer "zone". They were almost at the weight limit, and FedEx Ground did not like pallets--they wanted it in a box.

It's on eBay now. It's in Park City, UT.

Edit: Waitaminute! It says it's from an '81. It can't be 5-speed and 4wd from an '81. I see the transfer case, so I'm sure it's 4wd. I'll check with the seller to see if it's an '86, or if it's just a 4-speed.

any MUA "in the USA" will not fit the diesel and is also a HYD clutch

mounting it would be not easy but the MUA will fit the older gas 1.8, 1.9, 2.3L engines. IT DOES NOT FIT THE DIESELS. UNLESS YOU CUSTOM MAKE OR IMPORT A DIESEL HOUSING THAT FITS THEM
and has a 20%~ O\D and 2.25~ to 1 low range, where the MSG is 14.5% O\D with a 1.79~ low range.

 I stand corrected but now i need more info as i have the 86-87 msg ? in my truck now and it sounds like i may want to get the mua with the better overdrive. Anybody have the gear ratios to compare these two trans ? as for the hyd. clutch part that's a simple conversion as i already have the peddles and master cyl.

And the 5sp is well worth the trouble to install and any upgrade would even be better.

I'd suggest creating a new topic for your questions. :)

Jack,

i do a lot of highway driving and the 4 speed is driving me kinda nuts. i top out at 24 mpgwould this fit my 82 luv diesel 4x4:

www.ebay.com/itm/86-87-ISUZU-PUP-PICKUP ... 0588394385

im gonna assume its from a gasser, i will look at my luv and see if it has the 4bolt or 6 bolt on the back of the bellhousing. if it doesnt, where would you suggest finding one of the 6 bolt bellhousings?

That transmission is the closest thing you will find to a bolt-on swap (other than the same transmission but from a diesel). It says it's from a 2.3 (gas) truck. Their prices seems kinda high, especially when you add the shipping. This swap is not an easy one, since the 5-speed transmission is longer than the 4-speed.

Where are you located?

Jack
