For those of you running a long style pumps if your interested in doing a serpentine belt system for your luv here how to do it. go to your local pull it place and find an 85 caprice classic. The one I located was a wagon pull off the water pump, crank & alternator pulleys buy yourself a new belt and install. I have to run a thin line flex fan with mine. Iused to roll the v belts on a rugular bassis now that is solved. I`m sure prices will vary by area that you live in. Other years may work this is a basic 3 pulley system just like the regular v belts.

I Would Like To See Pics Of Everything To See The Clearance, I Also Would Like To Add Most Serpentine Uses A Reverse Flow Water Pump.

This set up is standard rotation. I really don`t have any way to take pics and download them. I`ll try to take some with my cell and see how they come out.
as far as clearances that also will vary from luv to luv depending on how the person set it up. for example radiator selection .I`m using one from a chevelle others are using after market alluminum unit as well as how you positioned the radiator when you mounted it. so some people might have more or less clearance pics of mine really won`t give a whole lot of info. I have about 1" clearance between the rad and the fan bolts. the thin line fan only clears the alternator by about 1/2. it is definately a tight fit. If you already have a long style pump in yours it should clear but yes you would want to measure carefully. By the way my total investment was about 70.00 including the new fan which I needed anyway,

I had serious clearence probems. Largest problem- harmonic balance was so dang long I can barely clear the front cross beam.

That silver aluminum L bracket is part of the radiator brace. In those pictures I have not gotten the motor seated behind the crossmember, but resting on top of it by 1/4 inch.

I like a serpentine belt system, but if it goes you loose everything. The waterpump is what I worry about most. Carry a extra belt and a few tools that are needed to do a roadside repair, and you should be ok.

My old Chevette was hard on timing belts. I carried a extra belt a few wrenches and the drill bit used to line the top gear up. !5 minutes and I was ready to go.

Spare belt and tools or keep the old belt system.

That just my 2 cents worth, you can keep the change.
Richard
PS you might want to buy a new belt tensioner if you go serpentine belt system. check yours for tension and free movement too.

I agree with PapaG, have a spare belt with you. I took a trip to Bryan Tx over the weekend and as i got to the first stoplight in town, i heard a clicking noise emmiting from the engine. I got to my Bros house and i couldn't hear the noise anymore. I popped the hood and had a look and found a bad spot on the belt. I installed the old spare belt (which was in better shape than the one on the motor). The next day i bought a new one. The spare is back under the seat just in case. I just might replace the tensioner pulley. I've had that fail on me before too.

Thanx For The Pic, and Yes I Too Agree Carry A Extra Belt. But From What I Have Been Told They Suppose To Hold Up Better In Upper RPM's. I Don't Really Know I Never Had Serpentine That Wasn't Close To Stock Or Stock. I Have Had To Replace A Lot Of Tensioners Over The Years Most Of The Only Require A Ratchet, Some Requires Like A 5/8s I Can't Remember Them All Right Off Hand They Are A Few Different Combos. Thats Just My Negative $2.99......I Will Keep you Change lol

The set up I`m running doesn`t have any tensioners. it adjust off the alternator just like the regular v belts. the crank pulley on this comes within about 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch of the front edge of the crossmember. I notthed the crossmember for the pulley and reboxed it in. well I tried to get the pics on here but I`m not to puter literate so Igive up. Maybe I will email to ben have put in the tech section or something

The belt set up racelife is describing isn't actually a true serpentine belt system as such. This may be causing some confusion. The set up he is using has a serpentine style belt. It adjusts like a standard alternator v belt, as it replaces just the standard v pulleys as he described in his first post. These systems usually had regular v belts driving the power steering pump and the smog pump. GM went to this before the serpentine set up with the one piece cradle that all the accessories mount to. I'm not sure what model years were used, but most v8's from 1983 to 1986 at least, had them. March sells an aluminum set up like this for around $265. I hope this post will help.

I have the March setup and it works great. mytmouz is right it is not a true serpertine setup but its works great. It looks really great and have spun close to 8000 with the setup. The only bad thing is that you cant change the belt with only one wrench in two minutes.
