I have been restoring a 1980 4x4 luv, and wanted to know if there are any trannys out there that are compaitble with the stock 1.8L engine.
Perhaps a s-10 5spd (with transfer case)
I am also considering puting in a V-6. I am thinking it might be easer just to put the new motor and tranny in then just a tranny.
Let me know if you guys have any info on this.
thanks!

I don't know about an S10, but I've looked at couple of Isuzu 5 Spd transmission/transfer cases and they look like a pretty close match. I've never had one side by side with the 4Spd out of a LUV though so it is kind of hard to tell for certain until someone tries it.

I've been looking for a good combo of V6 and 5 Speed transmission for my 4x4 LUV off and on for a while now too. Perfect would be something that would basically bolt up, no fabricating drivelines that end up not working out anyway. V6 power, and 5 gears to make up the extra gas used launching off the stop lights in hwy mileage.

The problem you get into with replacing the motor, then the trans/t-case, is it doesn't end there. You end up with drivelines to work out, and you might as well upgrade axles which means you should just straight axle the front. By the time you get through welding up parts, you might as well just pull the body and put it on another frame and running gear.

Can you still get kits to rebuild the 80 Luv 4x4 tranny & T-case?
Mines got a worn reverse gear and pops out of that gear too.

Theoretically a Trooper 5spd would replace a 4x4 LUV transmission, but I have yet to test that theory myself. For a 2WD LUV you would be looking for an Isuzu PUP 5Spd. The year that sticks in my mind that Isuzu started to really change things (motor, trans) is 1986, so 85 and older are probably the best bet.
