only time I've ever busted one was when i sheared what I think was a defective solid cross (spicer) U joint at 120+mph and the shaft hit the ground which shocked the trans case and shattered the bellhousing. this is the remains of a 6 week old 4L60 in my 93 Z28 on the jug.

The trans almost came out on the road. the only thing holding it in there was the rear mount and the case in that area was cracked too.

stock bellhousing is fine on med-high perf but a full race trans with a brake and 6000 stall would probably be safer with a JW installed

yeah... that happened right after i just got done doin a 130 mph blast. I just lifted and was decel'ing to 120-125 when the u joint let go. this was on the I-5 at 6:30am. the shaft hitting the ground sent a shower of sparks everywhere which parted the cars behind me like the red sea.

That is about what my stock luv 4spd looked like after I hit a bridge head on.

My dad bought a Chev 4x4 pickup that had similar damage to a TH400. It was an old farm crummy, and if you ever worked on a farm as a teenager you would know exactly how that might have happened. ;)

oh thats nothing. u should see what happens when an intermediate sprag lets go while ur buzzing 8000 RPM.....been there done that. I got lucky the LUV floorboards kept parts from coming into the cab.

I've also seen a shaft let got and hit the ground, bust the trans like that AND thrust the crankshaft forward in the motor.

Chassis flex in a Drag Racer will break at the bell housing area. Been there done that several times before realizing the problem.
