How do I wire this truck? I have HEI and GM alternator. What about the stock coil wires? Where do I run the "Battery" terminal wire from the distributor? Wiring is out of my league! Help! I've tried to read up on wiring but it may as well be Japanese.

Well you can use the same dist. wire. Just hook it to the hot side of the dist. Its the one connection closest to the cab. As far as the alt. wires, they are basically the same too, but you need to run the one wire kinda alt. Not the one that 2 wires plug into. Hope this doesn't confuse you to bad. Let me know how it goes.

The Truck is a '76. The HEI is around a '76 as well. The GM distributor is a 2-wire. I have a diagram that tells me how to wire the dist. what puzzles me is the Luv plug that plugged into the Luv distributor--what do i do with it?

This wiring diagrams it on the internet so I can see what you are looking at?
If you have any stock LUV ignition part such as old coil or ballast resistor, they need to be removed. Because the HEI needs a solid 12V. When these are removed You should have one wire hot wire. I'm not sure how different your 76 is in wiring than my 80 but I used only one wire and it goes directly to the HEI dist.

I have removed the coil. The "batt." terminal on the HEI is going to the "R" terminal on the starter. As far as the GM Alt. goes, the #2 terminal (sensing) is jumpered into the battery wire terminal and the #1 (field) terminal goes to the indicator light or resistor. That's what the diagram shows. I can't remember where I got it at. I just don't know which Luv stock wires go where on this GM alt.

You should have a heavy gage wire that was hooked to the old alt. With the key on or off is this wire always hot?

So you got the one wire alt. right?!! So the big black wire goes to the batt. connection. Then you have 2 small wires left. You will have to put ends on them, and hook them up. If they are backwards, your alt. light on the dash will come on. Swap em and you should be good to go. If you are running a newer alt. Then trade it back for the 1 wire older gm alt. I went through this too. As far as the dist. goes like I said, the wire that was to the positive side of the old coil, goes to the hei dist. I will go take a pic in a little bit.

Ok I've tried to write this twice. The field wire hooks into the white and red wire that on the stock volt reg Plug and the red wire (sensing) goes to the battery. The large gage wire that hooked into the back of the old alt hooks the the post marked BAT on the back of the alt. You can also connect this wire to the terminal on the starter that comes from the battery. I'm not sure what year your truck is but I looked at diagrams for series 5 - 10 and the gen light wire at the reg connector is white and red. These directions are for an older GM alt with a two wire plug. On the HEI DIST. there are 2 wires going to the pos side of the coil find out which one is hot with the key on that is the wire you hook to the BATT terminal on the HEI cap/coil.

Image well I cant get the pic of the dist., but here is what the back of the alt. should look like. Running this alt. you use the existing regulator. Using a newer alt with the built in regulator wont work. And run the wire that was to the hot side of the coil to the hei. I had trouble with all this too. Hope this helps.

hey guys, thanks for the input. Blue Meanie sent me wiring conversion diagrams and lots of info. This stuff may be of help to you guys as well. I would send it to you if I knew how. e-mail him and he will send it. Even if you don't use it right now it would be good to file for later use.

Yes!!!!!!!!! Seems to be working. I haven't drove it yet but idling everything seems to be fine. I'm itching to drive it but a few more kinks to work out and I and my son are hitting the road--finally!

Sounds like something that should be posted in the Information section of the web site.
