well if you have the oney for one id go with either. i dont think your gonna need a 12 bolt or a 9 for a 305 though.
a cheaper rearend that just bolts in is a s10 rearend. plenty strong for a 305. both my friends that have v8 luvs have s10 rearends and theyre doing fine and the both have 300+HP on theirs. one of em has like 400hp on his.
just a suggestion. now if you have the money to get a ford 9 or a 12 bolt go for it. but youll have to have it narrowed and new axles and spring mounts.

A 305 can be replaced quickly with another smallblock. One with major power. Right now you might think that this would be out of the question. But once you get bit by the demon of acceleration, Things start to snowball. If you jump to a Ford 9" assy. Mods can be done just by removing the pumpkin and fitting different gears and/or some kind of locker assy.
My plan is to build a second unit for strip use. Just loosen the axles and swap the pumpkins, fill with fluid after getting everything back together. Run a few weeks with tall gears, then a few weeks with short gearing.

yeah. i figured that s10 rear would be a good place to start off at.
but yeah if you can get a 12bolt or a 9 for cheap, jump on it.

if you plan on going fast or pushing alot of power get the ford 9". The biggest downfall of the GM axles is that they use C-clips in the differential to keep the axles in. So if you launch hard and break and axleshaft, your tire and wheel on the side that broke are going to fall out...

A Ford 9" is WAY stronger than a 12 bolt chevy. Do it once....do it right
