 Post subject: Starter draging
PostPosted: Thu Oct 07, 2004 7:46 am
This will be my second time I've put a starter on my luv sbc350/th350. It has only been about two weeks since the transplant. The first starter was draging as well but it broke the soleniod, replaced it and this one was draging and now it just clicks and want turn over. One thing that's getting me is that we put a starter from an 305 motor on it (Machanics idea). Like i said it cranked, sometimes started with no problems. Bought both new from AutoZone. I'm Thinking of just putting one on for an 350.

Is the starter physically dragging on the ground, or its "dragging" as it turns over? :?

Also, I don't see how a starter from a different sized SBC would make any difference. I always thought they had a fairly standard sized starter for that year of production. I may be wrong though. I know Summit has some good starters in there catelog, might be worth checking out..

With the starter draggin, clicking & wont turn over.
Are you running headers?? If so, the heat from them could be too much for the solenoid. Invest in a good starter, & put a heat sheild over it. Summit, & Jegs carry the heat sheilds.

My Camaro would do the same thing. I could go somewhere in it, then get right back in it, to leave, & it would not start. I'd have to let it sit & cool off, or take a long screwdriver out & short it (bypass the solenoid), to get it to start so that I could leave.

Also, it may need to be shimmed. "Draggin", it could be too close to the flexplate, & binding it. Therefore, burning it up.

Hope this helps.
