Post subject: PUP motor & trans??
PostPosted: Sun Apr 04, 2004 5:43 pm
Well my motor has just about given up on me. I have a chance to get a motor and trans from a junkyard for $500.00, out of a PUP. Will it bolt right up to my 72 LUV? The motor and trans that I have in it now are from a 78 LUV so the modifications have all ready been made to the motor mounts. Should I grab the driveline from the PUP also?

What year P'up and what motor? If it's a G200 motor,(1.9) it will bolt right up to your Luv, but the G200 motor has a mechanical fuel pump on the right side of the cylinder head instead of the electric one mounted on the frame. You will either need to leave the pump in place or make a metal plate to cover up the hole so all your engine oil doesn't come out. the transmission should work for you, but grab the P'up driveshaft just incase the diameter of the output shaft is different. I have a 4x2 transmission (free) if you can pick it up. I live in SE PA.

Not on a 72 LUV. The PUP 1.9L motor is externally the same as a 76 and new LUV 1.8, but the 72 LUV has very different motor mounts and a lot of stuff is on the wrong side of the motor. (Fuel lines, wiring, etc, etc) You need a block from a 72-75 LUV in order to have a bolt in swap on a 72 LUV. Anything else and you will need a welder to create motor mounts.

Check it out 800xl, He already has a motor from a 78 in it and the mounts have already been changed.

Doh, my bad. I read 72, PUP motor, and my brain stopped working. Was a long day yesterday.

If it is already switched over to a 78 then it would be a bolt in deal. If the Pup is 4 spd I doubt anything wouldn't line up, including the driveline you already have. Just in case see if you can pick up the driveline and return it if not needed, or just talk the junkyard into putting a hold on it. I think you'd have more troubles with the PUP shaft being the wrong length than the output shaft being different. If it is just the output shaft you could take the yoke off the PUP driveline and put it on yours.

The only thing to deal with besides the fuel pump would be the electronic ignition and maybe a couple of emissions hookups on the carb. The ignition you could just run the disti from the 78 motor, or check out the electronic ignition swap article on the main page for what other parts to nab and go with the newer disti. The carb *might* have a part or two that changed for emissions with different electrical hookups, but I think the 78 should be pretty close already to most carb'd PUPs in that department. It wouldn't hurt to pick up a Haynes or Factory service manual for the PUP just for the extra info you might need on wiring.

I think Isuzu stopped calling them PUPs in about 85, which was also about the last year of the 1.9L. If it is newer than that and has something like a 2.3L you might be into more work, but the payoff would be a fair bit more power.

87 was the last year for the P'up with the 1.9. I had an 86 myself for about 5 years. Converted it to 4X4 with 80 4X4 luv parts. Another one of my fine accomplishments. :)
