I'm swapping a 5.7 vortec into my 79. I'm using the efi butnot the serpentine setup. I'm sure I need to use a standard rotation long water pump. My question is what oil pan to use as I believe the plan on it is six quarts. It's from a 4x4. Also what to do about the filter mount as it is set up for the oil cooler. I thought of just using it that way, but will it clear the steering and headers? Thanks.

The pan will fit, depending on the mounts. (Some people build their own, so a fixed point to set the engine in is determined by the installer in that case). I have PowerbyAce mounts and a 1995 4x4 pan on my truck with the vortec heads and such. I removed the filter piece and used a stock filter mount off an old motor that was scrap. (Not Vortec specific, as I think it was a 2 piece rear seal motor I got mine off of) I have a standard rotation short water mump and pulley set up, with the alternator mount off a 1971 chevy truck. There is just enough room for a fixed blade fan on the water pump. I had a divorced filler neck added to an aluminum radiator and set it inside the core support...

(I have the Hooker mounts on my drag truck, and it has an 8 quart pan)...

Thanks. I'm going to start putting things together soon.
