Post subject: Engine upgrade for 4x4
PostPosted: Fri Nov 21, 2003 10:28 am
Ok guys
I have just acquired a 1980 4x4 Luv. Does anyone know what other Isuzu engine will swap out and bolt up to the existing transmission so as to get more power.

Thanks \
Rudy

Go with the trooper idea and get the power steering at the same time.

The Trooper G200 engine is a direct bolt-on replacement for the G180 that you have. (76 or later LUV)

I'm doing both the G200 and a 5 speed into my 4x4 LUV at the same time.

i just thought of something. since early s10s came with the g200 as a base...don't you think they might have used the same motor mounts on the 2.0 and 2.8? could be worth a shot with those motors, and they're a bit easier to find parts for than a 1.9l :D

You might have fun mounting the transmission even if you can get the motor mounted. I bet the housing has a different bolt pattern than the G200...

The 2.0 and 2.8 use different transmissions, so no swap without taking the trans too. Isuzus (troopers, etc) with 2.8s are the same story. (Same 2.8 as the GM actually)

On the other hand, you can bolt a 2.3L from a 86-87 trooper (or 86 to about 93 Isuzu pickup) to the LUV trans from what I've been able to figure. Better yet, swap the 5spd along with it. You should also be able to take the 2.6L 4cyl from an 87-91ish Trooper and put it in a LUV, but you'll have fuel injection wiring to sort out, 2.3L is a carb motor so a little easier. I've not been able to puzzle out for certain if the 2.3L intake will fit on the 2.6L head to get a nice simple carb setup 2.6L. I do know the 2.3L head is different enough to raise compression ratios a fair bit, but can work on a 2.6L. That would allow the carb intake for sure, but who wants to buy all their gas at the airport?
