no offense but you should do a bit of research before posting new topics... or start a build/question thread so you can have everything located in one thread and spend less time jumping between.
but 400 sounds reasonable for a 350 in running shape.. i paid $425 for a 4.3 w/700r4 and t-case but the engine and trans need a rebuild.
do you have a transmission or do you need to buy one also?

how serious of a rebuild?? check out monstertrans.com for a rebuild kit they have a few options for the turbo 350 thats where im getting the kit for my 700r4.

i would go for a rering kit for the 350 with new bearings rings gaskets etc they are cheap and easy to find.
few examples...
http://www.ebay.com/itm/SBC-Chevy-350-S ... 64&vxp=mtr (rings rod/main bearings, gaskets)
http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/raframecatalog.php <great source of parts i buy from them a lot

a kit for the tranny will be $70 for Overhaul kit includes friction clutch plates, paper gaskets, O rings, lip seals, metal clad seals and sealing rings. http://monstertrans.com/store/products/ ... ssion.html and $50 for the servo kit

or $375 for a pretty much complete tranny worth of rebuild parts http://monstertrans.com/store/products/ ... d-Kit.html

good plan  not something to go after if you havent done it before

you planning to run the 350 as is or build it up before you drop it in

"He said compressions check out", are you going to take his word for it or check it yourself? Is is complete, intake to pan? Is the oil backed on under the valve covers? Sorry to say but if you don't know how to check out a Chevy smallblock how are you going to install it?

A lot of 1976 350's were low compression and are dogs when it comes to running well. Check the engine numbers and find out exactly what you have.
