If you can find an 86/87 isuzu trooper, it has a carborated 2.3 motor. If I were you, and had the funds, I would pull that motor and rebuild it. I've heard that they will bolt right up to everything and have double the power and reliability.

That engine wont work with his trans. A 72 trans will only work with the 72 to 75 engine. If you want a different engine you will need to change the trans.

Thanks for the correction. I'd hate to steer a guy in the wrong direction. I do hope I can get the funds up get all the parts and pieces off of an 86 trooper that is in my local junk yard before they crush it. The trooper is very clean and very complete.

Well in my opinion a small block V8 in a Luv is old school. I only say that because I have driven a SBC powered vehicle for most of my adult life. I find them to be simple and reliable and my Luv isn't too bad on gas with the 2BBL on it. As far as reliability goes the motor in my truck has been in it since 1988 it runs great, doesn't smoke, leak or overheat. You can build/find a mild engine, you don't have to go 383 stroker. If you found a decent doner car you can save some bucks that way too. There are tons of 305's floating around too. A V8 Luv is a blast to drive also. Good luck and I hope you keep that gem on the road.
