I have an 82 chevy luv 4x4 diesel with 4 speed and 4:10 gears. Is it possible to swap the differential with higher gear ratio from the chevy S-10?

If you have some fab skills, and a measuring tape, then yes...

"Possible" does not mean easy, cheap, or worthwhile.

Is there even an S-10 gear option that is better? (that is available for the FRONT diff)?

Thanks Jack, just looking into possibilities. With a 4 speed and 4:10 rear end my top speed is still 50-55MPH.

Wow, it should go 65+, maybe even 75 (max, not cruise). Rather than re-gearing, I'd be trying to diagnose the performance problem. My 2wd (3.73 rear end) would hit about 90 mph before I upgraded the transmission. I now have a higher 5th gear, and I don't know the top speed...and I don't plan to find out.

If you can put me in touch with someone with a 82 4x4 diesel that dosent have this issue from a stock truck I will gladly send you a big payday! I checked both front and back differentials a 4:10, the trannie runs smooth a 4 speed, the engine dosent smoke and has great power. The only thing left would be someone changed the trannie, but that dosent make sense. Again this isn't the first one, I have had 3 others(2 wd) with the 5 speed and I to could get it up to 80(down hill). I am at a loss on what to do. Be patiant I guess.

I gave you a general answer, based upon a vague question. You did not ask if the width was the same, if the spring perches were in the same spot, etc. I don't believe many of the board members here are psychic...

Oops. I think 75 would be a fantasy, I forgot you said 4-speed AND 4.10. The '86-'87 P'ups had 5-speeds, and they should do 75...and 65 is more typical for the 4-speeds. But 50 isn't right.

I went several years with a problem on mine that affected the highway performance. It seemed fine in stop-and-go driving, but it didn't want to go 65 on the highway. Considering it's 2wd and 5-speed, that's really bad. I tried several things to diagnose it for a few years (I even dropped the fuel tank and inspected it for debris). Finally, on the advice of someone on the IsuzuPup.com forum, I removed the Cold Start Device. This is designed to advance the injection timing for cold starts. I was skeptical, but I'd tried everything else. After I removed it, the truck drove like new. My fuel economy went up significantly, too.

Sounds like my problem, so how do you remove the cold start device and where is it?

It's on the passenger's side of the pump. It has a steel fuel line that goes to a fitting on the back of the pump. You can either remove completely, or "gut" it so that it's inop. Either way, you MUST block off that fuel line. I won't rehash the theory or the details here, but there's a LOT about it HERE, from a forum member who works at an injection shop.
