are there any kits made to switch the drive ratio on a stock 80 Mikado 4x4 (rear end only would be fine for the moment with me since the 4wd is rarely ever touched.)
the highway speed around here is 70mph and obviously with a stock 1.8L, 4 speed tranny and the obnoxiously low gearing make it a nightmare to keep the truck going at that speed and im sure im causing all kinds of extra stress on the engine driving at that speed for a while.
im wondering if there is a direct bolt in swap that can give me a little bit more of a... 18 yr old with a tiny budget and an obsession with hauling ass gear ratio. im looking for a pup 5 speed but havent found one yet and my budget is TINY
however i do have an almost complete G180 engine... minus a few of the external accessories, the valve cover and the crankshaft. anyone happen to have a 5 speed tranny or better geared rear end up for sale/trade?

Look for the Trooper 5 spd from a 2.3 Trooper for a bolt in 5 spd (cable clutch ) or the 2.6 i want to convert to hyd. clutch like the PUP. Also check the forums as i did this swap and posted pics although small you get the idea.

All P'ups (except the CA model for a couple of years) had cable clutches.

hydraulic clutch would be NICE if it didnt gouge another huge hole in my wallet, but i could probobly pick the system up from a newer pup or trooper in a salvage yard for pretty cheap right?
my eventual plan is to keep the 1.8 and work on gettin a 5 speed and a pup rearend, after thats all done save a bit of money and get ahold of a mostly bare 2.6L and hook up the intake and such from the 2.3L bolt that to the 5 speed and see where that takes me and modify the setup from there

The only 5-speed P'ups that EVER had hydraulic operated clutches were the CA version for a couple of years. I know, that's saying the same thing in a different way, but I don't know what else to tell you. Newer P'up, older P'up--doesn't matter, they were all cable (except the aforementioned rare CA ones). Now if you meant '88-'94, those were Pickups. I believe the 2.6 pickups had hydraulic clutches, but if I'm not mistaken, they were MUA transmissions. I do not know if those will bolt up to your motor--someone else here would know. I know P'ups fairly well, but not Pickups.

eh cable or hydraulic im not too worried about it as long as it runs gets me from A -> B in style im fine with it
and by the time i get bored enough of the setup as it is i should be done with my machining classes in college so i will just be able to make whatever i need to modify it

no one ever answered my question. do they make another gear set for the rear end that isnt such a slow ratio?

Yikes! I just noticed you're a 4wd! I know,

but I don't think you have ANY options for the front ratio, so you would be basically PERMANENTLY converting to a 2wd in the process. The 2wd P'ups came with 4.1 (gassers), and 3.73 (5-speed diesels), and 3.42 (4-speed diesels). I don't know about interchangeability with the 1st-gen LUV rear end, and I hope someone else can speak to this question.

yep kinda figured as much sadly the luv wasnt designed to be a little hotrod like we all wish it was.
since i got a brand new engine sitting in the bed about to be swapped in (was driven home from the lot in 1980 and pulled out for a V8 swap and stored indoors, off the ground and dis-assembled... greatest $100 craigslist find for me so far just gotta swap in my crankshaft.
so im thinking im gonna save some money grab a 5 speed, retrofit a fuel injection system up and mount a low boost turbo hopefully get that lil truck up to speed a bit 60 mph is just not my style

either i go 2wd or find a 4wd 5 speed transmission and spend a few hours modding my drivelines
defiantly worth it to have my first truck last me the next 15+ years on that new engine as long as i take care of it 8)
