Did the 9 inch just come in the v8 cars or some of the 6's like the comets and fairlanes had.
I found a comet that has a nice set of tailights i have on my truck and the rear is still under it. The junk yard didn't know he had it
My mistake

I haven't seen a factory 9 inch equipped 6 cylinder car, but that's not to say some of them didn't.

Some 6 banger Ford 1/2 ton pickups had 9" rears and the trk's are going to be the easiest to find 9" rears.

Look close as allot of the Fairlanes and Comets had the 8" rear ends and they look allot alike to tell witch one your looking at is simple if you can put a socket wrench on the bottom nut then it is a 8" rear.

If you find a comet or fairlane chances are its a 8'' the easiset way to tell is if you can get a socket on the bottom bolts its an 8'' if not its a 9'' most granadas had 8'' too they are also very tough ,good for street use but if you make any power save some time and money and do the 9'' to start with.Find a 57-59 fairlane or galaxie and get the 9'' from under it, its the right width only about 1/4'' wider and most already have a double rib center section I have one in mine with welds off a 68-74 nova and it works fine

Aside from gears and minor differences like spring location, are there any differences that we should look for?
I guess I am just asking if they have changed through out the years and different applications.
